islam is incompatible with life itself

Most Dutch say Islam incompatible with Western society

LONDON - Islam is incompatible with modern Western society, according to a majority of those responding to a recent Dutch survey. Most of the people polled expressed a negative view of Islam and Muslims.

The survey was released the same week that a Dutch Justice Ministry report said radical Islam had made significant inroads among the country's immigrants, posing a threat to the nation's security.

Known for its laissez-faire social attitudes, the sharp turn in public opinion against Islam in the Netherlands has sparked a debate that has prompted criticism of Queen Beatrix and the government for allegedly abandoning Western values in the face of Muslim pressure.

The poll conducted by Dutch research firm Motivaction for the GPD newspaper chain on June 2 found that 63 percent of those surveyed believed Islam was incompatible with modern European life.

More than a quarter of respondents said Muslim immigrants were rude, lazy, intolerant and prone to criminal behavior. They said the increase in Muslim immigration has had a negative effect on civic and social life, with almost 80 percent saying relations between Muslims and non-Muslims had become strained.

Government-backed initiatives to acculturate Muslim immigrants had failed, respondents said, as most believed that many immigrants had walled themselves off from Western society in an attempt to create outposts of their home cultures on Dutch soil.

Some government-sponsored moves to welcome Muslims have sparked controversy. In an address to parliament on June 6, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende applauded Queen Beatrix for agreeing not to shake hands with the leaders of the Mobarak Mosque in The Hague during a state visit to commemorate the mosque's 50th anniversary on June 2.

Queen Beatrix agreed not to shake hands with the Muslim leaders in deference to their belief that Islam forbids men to touch women other than their wives. This move was a laudable "example of religious tolerance," the prime minister said, that would make Muslims feel more welcome.

Conservative MP Geert Wilders said he was "purple" with rage at the queen's decision, calling it "dhimmi behavior." A dhimmi is a person of the dhimma, an Arabic term that refers in Islamic law to the pact of surrender contracted between non-Muslims and their Muslim conquerors.

"The queen and Prime Minister Balkenende are putting Dutch norms and values in a bargain sale," Wilders said.

The MP said the government, "under the pretext of tolerance, is selling out Dutch values such as equality between men and women." "We must instead make the case for Dutch norms and values," Wilders said.

The Brussels Journal commented that Queen Beatrix's tolerance appeared only to extend to Muslims, reporting that in 1982 she refused to meet with an Orthodox Jewish group because they didn't shake hands with women.

According to the justice and interior ministers, the threat of terrorism from radical Islam is "substantial."

The ministers told parliament that a "rapid spread of the Jihadistic ideology" was underway, with a number of moderate mosques passing under the control of Islamist ideologues.

"Radical movements, like Salafism, are currently gaining influence rapidly, both on the Internet and in more and more mosques. They prefer to use the Dutch language so that more and more young Muslims are reached, with all possible radicalization risks as a result," the ministers said.

The ministry report warned of possible repercussions from the upcoming release of former Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali's film Submission 2, which criticizes Islam for intolerance of homosexuals. The report said, "Controversial debates or artistic quotes about Islam in the Netherlands can be abused by radical Muslims abroad to agitate against the Netherlands."
France arrests a "very moderate" imam for terrorism financing

By Olivier Guitta

In fact Dahou Meskine along sixteen other people were arrested on Monday and Tuesday for allegedly financing Islamic terrorism. The most probable organization that benefited from this money is the Algerian terrorist group GSPC.
In fact, investigators found out that hundreds of thousands of Euros were funneled through some organizations and corporations owned by Meskine and his son to dubious NGOs. Nonetheles one of the persons in charge of the investigation acknowledged today to daily Liberation that it will be tough to prove that this was done solely to finance terrorism.

But what's even more troubling is the pedigree of Meskine. He is of Tunisian descent, ex member of the Islamist group An Nahda, founder of the UOIF (the French branch of the Muslim Brotherhood). But he had a change of heart and cut off all ties to UOIF because they were too close for comfort to the Muslim Brotherhood. He had been pushing since for interreligious dialogue between Christians, Jews and Muslims. He had defended France's secularism when it came to the banning of the hijab at school and has been consulted many times by Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy on Muslim issues.
Finally he is the founder of the first private Muslim middle school and Secretary Genereal of the Council of Imams of France.

If allegations are correct, then the change of heart of the "very moderate" imam did not reallly occur and the taqqiya was total. That is why being on the lookout and reading between the lines is quite important. Fortunately, it looks like French authorities have been doing a tremendous job in dismantling terrorist cells.

Muslim silence is deafening

The Complicity of Muslim Silence
By Robert Spencer | June 22, 2006

We have heard many times that the vast majority of Muslims in the West are decent, law-abiding citizens who do not engage in jihad terrorism. That is manifestly true: most Muslims in the West are not engaging in terrorist activity. Many no doubt have no intention of ever doing so. But the recent arrests in Canada have raised questions about to what extent Muslims in Canada and other Western countries who are not engaging in terrorist plotting actually disapprove of such plotting – and how many passively allow it to continue under their noses either out of fear or because the ideological kinship between them and the plotters is closer than most Western authorities would like to believe.

In a meeting with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police just after the arrests, one Canadian Muslim leader asked Canadian officials why they hadn’t informed Muslim leaders about the plot, so that those leaders could have stopped it.

But there is mounting evidence that many Canadian Muslims did know – and yet did nothing to notify Canadian authorities of the plot. The Toronto Star reports that another suspect, Qayyum Abdul Jamal, actively spread the jihad ideology at the Ar-Rahman Islamic Center for Islamic Education in southern Ontario. Indeed, his “outspoken Wahhabist views” had “alarmed” some of the directors of the Islamic center. But by the account of mosque officials, because Jamal unlocked the mosque for daily prayers and they valued his services as a caretaker, they did nothing to stop his preaching. The Washington Post reports unironically: “He cleaned the rugs and took out the trash at the mosque. For those services, the directors tolerated his vitriolic speeches that portrayed Muslims as oppressed by the West, according to people familiar with the mosque.” No mainstream media outlet seems to have asked Ar-Rahman Islamic Center officials why they thought taking out the trash was a sufficient counterbalance to preaching hatred and violence. Sidestepping the fact that Jamal had been allowed to preach freely, Center Imam Qamrul Khanson said of those arrested: “I will say that they were steadfast, religious people. There’s no doubt about it. But here we always preach peace and moderation.”

Yet another imam in Toronto, Sayyid Ahmed Amiruddin, noted that three of the plotters, Saad Khalid, Zakaria Amara and Fahim Ahmad, “would enter into the mosque to pray, and they would pray in a very aggressive manner, and they would come in military fatigues and military touques and stuff. It looked to me that they were watching a lot of those Chechnyan jihad videos online and stuff.” Amiruddin said that they were influenced by jihadist material from Saudi Arabia, including Qur’ans with inflammatory explanatory notes: “In the back of these Qur'ans that are being published in Saudi Arabia, you have basically essays on the need for offensive jihad and the legitimacy of offensive jihad and things like that. Very alarming stuff." According to the CBC, “Amiruddin said many mainstream Muslim organizations in Canada are really part of the problem, standing by as extremist propaganda spreads in the mosques.” But while Amiruddin points out that these young men would attempt to win others over to their point of view, he says nothing about having done anything to stop them, or about resisting jihadist recruitment in general -- much less working with authorities to help them apprehend jihadists.

Also according to the Star, some of the plotters belonged to a school Muslim association in which they “discussed at an association gathering whether suicide bombing was permissible in Islam. Their views were so violent that the other association members threatened to have them banned.” But they apparently did not actually have them banned, or alert anyone to their violent views.

Likewise another Toronto Muslim, Mohammed Robert Heft. Heft said that one of the plotters, Fahim Ahmad, “believed the 19 people involved in the World Trade Center bombings were martyrs and he was handing out DVDs openly of wills and testimonies of those 19 people suggesting what they did was right.” According to the CBC, Heft asserted that “a lot of young Muslims are angry and extremism is prevalent in the Toronto area.” Heft claimed that he was dedicated to combating this “extremism”: “For the last two years I’ve been involved in this mentality. I was dealing with it on a grassroots level. All it takes is a little education and sorting out who to take religion from.” Yet he too apparently did nothing to alert Canadian authorities to Ahmad’s views.

And after all this, Canadian Muslim leaders complain that authorities did not go to them.

Canadian authorities, and officials in all Western countries, have been supine in the face of all this kind of thing for far too long. The jihad arrests in Canada should focus scrutiny not on the alleged misbehavior of Canadian law enforcement officials, but on the Muslim communities tolerance of the jihadist evil they profess to abhor. Law enforcement authorities in the West should call Muslim communities in their countries to account on this, and quickly -- or risk the successful execution of a jihad plot planned and executed under the noses of silent and supposedly moderate Western Muslims.

Iraqi Reformist on Arab Society and Social Schizophrenia

In an article titled "Arab Society and Schizophrenia," Iraqi reformist Dr. Abd Al-Khaleq Hussein, who writes on several reformist websites, argues that Arab society suffers from "social schizophrenia," - the symptoms of which are similar to those of individuals suffering from actual schizophrenia. He further argues that the Arab governments must immediately launch social and political reforms which will gradually lead to democracy in the Arab world. If significant reforms are not carried out, he says, disasters will continue to strike the Arab word, and democracy will ultimately be imposed upon it through violent upheavals, as occurred in Iraq. In the article, he also called upon the Arabs to accept the help offered to them by the West - and especially by the U. S. - with the aim of facilitating positive change that will permit them to integrate into the international community.
The following are excerpts from the article: [1]

"This Split Personality Disorder Characterizes Not Only Specific Sectors of Arab Society, But [Also] the Governments, the Institutions of Civil Society, and the [Political] Parties"
"'Schizophrenia' is a word in ancient Greek that means 'split personality'... but it is also used in the social sciences to describe societies afflicted by severe duality in their behavior and their [moral] standards. In fact, if we carefully compare the medical and social forms of this disorder, we will find that the symptoms are very similar...
"Iraqi social scientist Ali Al-Wardi was the first to characterize the Iraqi people as suffering from this severe social illness, which he labeled 'split personality.' According to his theory, Iraqis suffer... from a conflict between the Bedouin values that have been passed down through the generations and the cultural values that the Iraqi society has acquired...
"As an illustration, he presents the example of a young Iraqi who wishes to choose his own wife, just like an enlightened Western man, and to exchange love letters with her,... but when he hears that some other man has similar relations with his sister or cousin, he immediately turns into a 'Bedouin' and murders his beloved sister and her lover...
"This split personality disorder characterizes not only specific sectors of Arab society, but [also] the governments, the institutions of civil society, and the [political] parties, especially the Islamic ones...
"The social and medical forms of this disorder have similar symptoms. The most important of these is delusions from which the patient suffers... For example:"

"Delusions of Grandeur"
"A [schizophrenia] patient believes that he is exceptional and that others should treat him as though he is an important person. The Arabs also believe that they are more important than others in every respect. They [believe that they] are the best among nations..., and regard other nations with contempt. They acknowledge no religion [but their own] and are unwilling to coexist peacefully with other religions. [They believe] that their faith is the only faith that mankind should embrace, and that whoever fails to embrace it is an infidel.
"In other words, all other religions are heathen, heretical and fabricated, and their followers should abandon them and embrace the Arabs' religion - Islam. If they fail to embrace Islam, the Muslims are entitled to wage war upon them, to kill their men or convert them by force, to take their women hostage, to sell their children in the slave market and to plunder their property...
"This disparaging view applies not only to non-Muslims, but also to other schools of thought within Islam. Each Islamic school of thought is full of contempt and hostility towards the others. The Salafis and Wahhabis, for example, are convinced that the Shiites must be killed, and that whoever kills them will be rewarded in the world to come..."

"A schizophrenia patient believes that others are plotting against him with the aim of harming and killing him, even though he hasn't a shred of evidence to prove this. This is exactly what happens with the Arabs, who are addicted to conspiracy theories. Whenever a disaster befalls them, they claim that it was brought about by a 'hostile Western Crusader-Zionist' conspiracy. They [say this] without bothering to think rationally and determine the true causes for their defeat...
"A schizophrenic imagines that people have nothing better to do than to talk about him, gossip about him, and plot against him. Consequently, he lives in a constant state of intense doubt and suspicion towards others, including the people closest to him, such as his wife, whom he suspects of cheating on him... The patient believes that even broadcasts on TV or on the other media are directed personally at him.
"This is exactly what happens in the Arab society with respect to foreign ideas and books. No society places books and ideas under siege the way Arab society does. Arab airports and sea ports are known for seizing books from the passengers. The Arabs are famous for translating the fewest books and for showing the greatest hostility towards the foreign sciences, to which they refer contemptuously... as 'imported ideas.' In addition, no people burn books and persecute intellectuals with more gusto than the Arabs."

"Somatic Delusions"
"The patient imagines strange and illogical things, for instance that foreign bodies are moving inside him, even though there is no evidence to suggest this. Similarly, Arab societies and governments suffer from the illness of [constantly suspecting] espionage by foreign agents. This is why the Arab jails are full of political prisoners and oppositionists accused of spying for other [countries]. In the eyes of the Arab governments and societies, the political opposition and the liberal intellectuals are traitors and agents of foreign intelligence [apparatuses]..."

"Disorganized Speech"
"A [schizophrenic] patient's speech makes no sense. There is no connection between the sentences, and the hearer or reader cannot understand what [the patient] means to say. The Arab societies display the same symptom - [it is] even [displayed by] people who present themselves as intellectuals and writers. We read them with the hope of understanding what they mean to say, but to no avail... And when you dispute [their claims], they say that the problem lies not with the writer but with the reader, since he is shallow and insufficiently educated, and that is why he fails to understand the ideas of the important writers and intellectuals..."

"Loss of Human Feeling"
"This is another phenomenon spreading through the Arab societies. Unrestrained terrorism and cold-blooded butchering of innocent people in front of the TV cameras provide [further] indisputable proof that Arab society is afflicted with this dangerous disease. It should be noted that the famous religious scholar Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi advised to refrain from showing the killings on TV. This means that he supports these acts, but advises not showing them in this manner, since they give Islam and the Muslims a bad reputation. In the eyes of some, this makes Al-Qaradhawi a moderate cleric."
"The Patient Loses the Ability to Enjoy Activities He Enjoyed in the Past"
"This is also true of the Arab society today. During the course of their history, the Arabs used their powers of reasoning and exercised independent judgment in religious ruling [ijtihad]... in order to find rational solutions for existing problems. But a few hundred years ago... the gates of ijtihad were shut, the mind was shut down, and [clerics] began to rely exclusively on what was said by the founding fathers [of Islam] over 1,400 years ago, even if their solutions were inapplicable to contemporary problems..."

"Inactivity and Lethargy"
"Schizophrenia patients spend most of their time in idleness or slumber. Laziness,... sleepiness, fatalism and lack of productivity are also widespread in the Arab countries. A study published a number of years ago found that a Western worker is five times more productive than an Arab worker..."

"Loss of Zest for Life"
"This is a well-known tendency in Arab society. As bin Laden said in his address to the West, 'you love life, while we thirst for death.' This is an integral part of Arab heritage... This is why preachers in the mosques glorify death [in their sermons] to young people, [teach] them to hate life, and encourage them to carry out jihad terrorist operations..."

"Isolation From the World"
"Schizophrenia patients prefer to live in isolation from the rest of the world, and spend most of their time alone, detached from other people. They are uninterested in the company of friends and relatives, are unable to form friendships with other people or to maintain previous friendships, and do not care that they have no friends.
"All these symptoms are also prevalent in the Arab society, and are due to faulty education from an early age. Most textbooks for children and youth teach hatred towards others, and [encourage the reader] to avoid the company of non-Muslims. More than that, [they instruct the reader] to avoid greeting a non-Muslim, and, if greeted by a non-Muslim, to reply in an aloof and contemptuous manner. [They also teach that] if you shake hands with a non-Muslim, you must afterwards wash your hands. Directives of this sort are published by all religious schools - even by moderate clerics, and certainly by extremist ones.
"Arab culture also encourages isolation from the world. The world is divided into two camps: 'believers' and 'infidels'... Sheikh Al-Islam ibn Taymiyya encouraged [the Muslims] to hate the unbelievers, saying: 'When you spend time in the camp of the unbelievers - for purposes of medical [treatment], study or trade - harbor hostility towards them in your heart.'..."

"Denial of the Disease"
"Schizophrenia patients deny that they are ill, and believe that they are completely well. They are hostile towards anyone who tries to treat them or wishes to help them. Similarly, the Arabs are unaware of the duality in their behavior and standards, and do not realize that they are backward and require immediate treatment in order to overcome their backwardness and [to avoid] the disasters that befall them. Anyone who tries to draw their attention to their own backwardness... is accused of treason and of being a foreign agent, usually [an agent of] the 'imperialists,' 'Crusaders.' or 'Zionists.' Consequently, intellectuals have been persecuted in Arab countries throughout the ages..."

"Mental Paralysis"
"A [schizophrenia] patient is utterly convinced that his notions are correct, to the point of [mental] paralysis... The same [phenomenon] is also widespread in the Arab society, which believes that only its own culture and notions - which have been handed down from generation to generation - are valid, and tries to eliminate those who think differently... [Schizophrenia] patients are unable to understand abstract ideas according to their context, and take everything literally....
"A similar situation exists in Arab society, which cannot differentiate among various situations. Occupation of one country by another is a vile thing, but there are exceptional cases in which the occupation is necessary since it is for the good of the occupied country. This is true for Iraq, and for Europe during the Second World War. But Arab society regards the liberation of Iraq from an extremely vile, fascistic regime as an [act of] colonialism aimed at plundering [Iraq's] treasures and killing its people…"

Al-Zarqawi, bin Laden, and Al-Zawahiri Could Not Have Perpetrated Their Atrocities Without Extensive Popular Support
"Some may object [to my arguments], asking why I take the behavior of a single individual, a handful of people, or a group, [and present it] as the behavior of entire nations. Why do I ascribe the behavior of Al-Zarqawi, bin Laden or Al-Zawahiri to all Arabs? Why do I present the sin of one cleric as the sin of all clerics?
"[But] the truth is that what happened in Algeria and what is currently happening in Iraq and in other parts of the Arab world does not result from the deviant behavior of individuals, but from general behavior that is inevitably caused by [our] culture.
"Barbaric acts of mass murder were rampant in Algeria, with the number of victims reaching a quarter of a million. School girls were murdered for not wearing the veil. The murders carried out by 'jihad fighters' in Iraq have come to symbolize [the general situation there], which is condoned by Arab societies.
"Needless to say, Al-Zarqawi, bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri could not have perpetrated all these atrocities without extensive popular support, without constant recruitment [of new jihad fighters], and without the cultural and ideological support that is [ingrained] in the [Arab] heritage and education. Surveys conducted in a number of Arab countries showed that the majority supports the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization, and that bin Laden himself enjoys great popularity, especially in the Gulf countries…"

If Arab Governments Do Not Begin to Lead Their Peoples Towards Democracy, History Will Force It on Them
"Based on the above, I believe that Arab societies… suffer from duality in their standards, their views, and their behavior, and require immediate treatment if they want to heal, to overcome their backwardness, and to live in peace with the international community…
"Obviously, it is difficult to change the people's entire outlook overnight, especially when the governments constitute an obstacle to reform. The process is difficult and will take a long time, but there is nothing to prevent it from starting today… The ball is in the court of the Arab governments, who must understand the reasons for their backwardness and the backwardness of their people.
"The problem with these governments is that they have always objected, and still object, to gradual and peaceful development… [which occurs naturally] in the course of history. Democracy is the order of the day, and if the Arab governments do not begin to gradually lead their peoples towards democracy, history will force it on them through violent [upheavals], as occurred in Iraq...
"It should be noted that over 200 years ago, the Western peoples went through what the Arab peoples are experiencing now. They managed to resolve their problems, to build an advanced civilization, and to make economic, social, scientific and technological progress - but [this happened] only after reason was liberated from [the shackles of] fairytales and lies, [and after they] separated religion and state, established regimes that were secular, liberal and democratic, and gave freedom of speech and thought to [their] intellectuals."

Why Islam Is In Shambles

Why Islam Is In Shambles
Jun 14, 2006
Amil Imani - Persian Journal

Islam is in shambles for a variety of reasons. A major problem with Islam is that there are as many different versions of Islam as there are Islamic pundits and there are legions of them.

Another reason why Islam is in shambles is that it is all things to all people. Even a cursory study of the Qur'an, the immutable word of God, as Muslims see it; the Hadith, the authoritative sayings of the Prophet; and, the Sunna, the Prophet's life conduct, present a body of contradictory and even outright erroneous information. This body of Islamic doctrine enables a person to pick and choose the parts he likes and ignore those he doesn't like. This feature explains why some of the good as well as the most beastly people are Muslims. Amazingly enough, both types justify themselves and their behavior by selectively citing from the Qur'an, the Hadith and the Sunna.

Here is only one example of taking an Islamic teaching as you prefer it. The Qur'an admonishes the believers: Jahedoo fee sabeel-u-llah?make jihad for the cause of God. Literally translated, this phrase directs the believers to exert themselves in service to the cause of God. The catch is in the word "exert." Some Muslims understand it as spiritual exertion. Other Muslims take it as a commandment to exert themselves by the sword. And both can be right because the rest of the Qur'an not only fails to clarify the statement, but adds further substance to each position. It is in cases like this that the pronouncements of the Islamic high divines can sway the balance in favor of one or the other. Unfortunately, not many voices of Islamic authorities are raised on the side of tolerance, peacefulness and other positive teachings of Islam. The most one hears from Islamic apologists are time-worn and banal pronouncements such as "Islam is a religion of peace."

It is a sad fact that generation after generation of Sunni Moftis?highest ranking Sunni clerics?and Ayatollahs?highest ranking Shiite clerics, over the years have indoctrinated their underling clergy as well as the masses with selective teachings that promote intolerance, exclusion and hostility toward non-Muslims?people labeled as heathens, infidels, unbelievers and apostates. Selective choice of the scripture, combined with a siege mentality endemic to the cradle of Islam, the Middle East, generate a fury of hatred that has the potential of devouring the world. If only Muslims could purge the negative aspects of its scripture and practice its positive teachings, the world would become a diverse community of humanity at peace with one another.

The question is: Is that possible or are we headed for the clash of the civilizations?

There are some wonderful statements in the Qur'an. One, for instance, says: The most beloved amongst you in the sight of God is the one who is the most virtuous. Not the rich, not the powerful and not the hateful. The most virtuous is most beloved, it says. Yet the radical Islamists have come to interpret killing and maiming the infidels as great acts of virtue, acts that would make them most beloved by God.

Reforming Islam is unfortunately not a realistic possibility. About the only universal agreement that exists among Islamic authorities is that every word of the Qur'an is the word of God and is not subject to human modification, ever. The 'Hadith' also enjoys a similar sacrosanct standing. And of course, the faithful Muhammad's conduct as recorded in the Sunna is the model to be emulated. Hence, one can pick and choose, but one can not discard or revise any part of the scripture. For this reason a Martin Luther type reformation has not happened and will not likely ever happen within Islam.

Islam's detractors point out numerous absurdities in the Islamic scripture. In fairness to Islam, we can find just as many perceived absurdities in other religious scriptures. Many of the scriptures' absurdities may, in fact, be allegories, metaphors, similes and symbols. Islamic scripture, for instance, records that Muhammad split the moon in half with his sword. Clearly, splitting the moon must be taken symbolically. Some claim that in this case "moon" stood for high ranking religious divines of the time and Muhammad destroyed them by the sword of his new faith. It was the material sword that sallied forth out of the Arabian dessert and forced Islam on people far and wide.

The fact that Islam is a splintered house complicates matters greatly. The faith is divided into Sunni and Shiites sects with numerous sub-sects. The divisions and contentiousness are so profound that members of one sect consider the other Muslims as apostates worthy of death. The division goes back to the time of the Prophet himself. Shiites believe that the enemies of true faith subverted its chain of authority at Muhammad's death. They claim that the Prophet, while on his deathbed, asked for a parchment to dictate his will and to appoint Ali, his cousin and son-in-law, as his successor. The Shiites claim that Omar, an influential disciple and commander of the faith, declined the request saying to the Prophet: hasbena ketab-ul-llah?sufficient unto us is the book of God. Before long, division and infighting started in earnest and continues to this day. Oppression of Shiite minorities in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are only two glaring instances of this longstanding and irreconcilable intra-faith hostility. The Shiite majorities in other lands return the favor to the Sunni minorities, as is the case in Iran. The recent horrific sectarian killings in Iraq represent glaring instances of irreconcilable differences among the various claimants to the mantle of true Islam.

The Bible says, "By their fruits shall ye know them." The fruits of Islam are there for everyone to see for himself. Islam may have given the world some choice fruits. It has assuredly given the world many poisonous fruits as well.

Some claim that Islam is inherently good, the majority of Muslims are good and only a small minority has hijacked the good faith of Muhammad by engaging in acts of intolerance, hatred and violence. The question is: why is it that the good Islam is not ruling in the world and the bad Islam is engulfing it in fire? Human nature is the culprit, in part. We humans are attracted to hate like flies are to honey. Hate is an easy sell. It is appealing and little effort is required to hate. Hate gathers up the person's or the group's frustrations, anxieties, fears, paranoia and many other negative emotions in one handy bundle and hurls it at a convenient target. History is replete with instances of hate energizing the masses into commitment of small and large scale atrocities.

Sell hate and people queue several blocks to buy. Sell love and you will be mostly by your lonely self. Is this a cynical view? No, it is a realistic one. It describes human's lower and primitive nature which must be painstakingly overcome through persistent education and awakening of man's higher nature.

Religious high authorities play a critical role in steering the masses toward or away from hate. The late Pope's public pronouncement, for instance, absolving the Jews as the Christ killers has reduced anti-Semitism among the rank and file Christians. Fatwas?religious decrees?by Islamic Moftis and Ayatollahs carry considerable weight with their respective followers. Sadly, most decrees and adjudications of these high Islamic authorities are exclusionary and even hostile toward the out-groups. These high divines are the suppliers of opinions as well as the teachers of the rank and file clergy who take the same ideas to the masses in villages and cities. Madresehs in Pakistan, schools in Saudi Arabia and Maktabs?religious schools?in Iran, as well as numberless mosques serve as places where the disease of hate can be transmitted with considerable success to the just too willing believers.

This virulent disease of hate of "others," is now leaving its traditional Muslim lands and infecting cities, towns and villages of the larger world. Muslims believe that the earth is Allah's and all of it rightfully belongs to the Muslims. Non-Muslims in any land are simply usurpers and occupiers who must either convert to Islam or give way to the legitimate people?the Muslims.

In Islam's theocracy, religious authority is conferred by an informal consensus of the peer group. One becomes an Ayatollah, for instance, by demonstrating to other ayatollahs his undeviating devotion to the dogma they hold. If one deviates from the accepted line, he is not likely to make a village mullah, much less an Ayatollah. This is a systemic problem that is not amenable to change. It is a pathological theological inbreeding.

Islam or religions in general are sources of energy. The energy can achieve magnificent things or destroy anything. It is up to us to put religion to good use, as people have done for millennia, and to avoid using it as a weapon of death and destruction?again, as people have done so for millennia.

In the Islamic theocracies, everyone pretends publicly his undeviating belief in the faith, as preached and promoted in his locality. If there are any unbelievers, doubters or atheists, they have to hide, not in closets, but in deep subterranean holes. Pressure to be religious is so great that pretending piety is an art form. Yet, much of religious ado is per forma rituals. Admittedly, things are hardly any better in the non-Islamic lands. People, once a week, go to a religious service, repent of their sin, pay up and go back to a life of sin for the next six days in a sinful world.

Perhaps there is a way out of the present impasse with Islam. Iran's President Ahmadinejad has invited President George W. Bush, albeit in a convoluted eighteen page epistle, to embrace Islam. Ahmadinejad seems to think that Bush is the most powerful man in the world. He must have concluded that if Bush were to embrace Islam, the masses of infidels would follow his example.

Let us for a moment accept Ahmadinejad's summon. Question: Which sect of Islam and which one of its numberless sub-sects should we join? Beside the two major branches of Sunnis and Shiite, there are dozens and dozens of sub-sects, and schools, each of which is mortally convinced they represent the only true Islam. Ahmadinejad's own brand of Islam is alien to the majority of even the Shiites. He is reportedly a devout member of a remodeled and secretive hate-based Hojjatieh which is presently operating under the guise of the Haghani sect under the leadership of a most close-minded fanatical leader?Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi.

Further complications present themselves. Space limitation does not allow presenting all of them here. Only one should suffice for now. One of the issues Muslims, worldwide, are in general agreement on is the status of women. It places women squarely under the thumb of men. It says in the Quran: Alrejaalo qawaamoon al-alnesa?men are rulers over women. Women of non-Islamic world have valiantly worked to attain a degree of equality with men. They are not likely to barter their hard-earned rights for the privilege of becoming head-to-toe covered second class citizens, deprived of education and opportunities. We, non-Muslim men, are not going to leave our emancipated, fully participating and contributing members of our society behind and subjugate ourselves to a barbaric set of Shriah laws which were enacted by stone-age mentality.

In conclusion, Islam is not only divided, it is shattered. It is in shambles, long past fixing itself, much less ruling the rest of the world. It is time that Muslims, those who consider themselves good and peaceful, as well as those who want us to accept their ideology of barbarism at the point of the sword, to take the fateful step and join the free and emancipated family of humanity. There is no going back. Barbarism is in our past.

THINKING ALOUD: ‘An archaic incongruity’? — Razi Azmi

Whenever a terrorist outrage occurs in any Muslim country and the victims are ordinary Muslims, we are told that Muslims must never kill Muslims. Even fatwas are issued to that effect. The unspoken and unwritten subtext seems to suggest that it is acceptable for Muslims to kill non-Muslims, provided there is a pretext

In their nearly 400-page Report of the Court of Inquiry into the Punjab Disturbances of 1953, popularly known as the Munir Report, two eminently learned Pakistani judges, Chief Justice Muhammad Munir and Justice MR Kayani had concluded, after 117 sittings, perusing 3,600 pages of written statements and sifting through 2,700 pages of evidence over eight months:

“Nothing but a bold reorientation of Islam to separate the vital from the lifeless can preserve it as a world idea and convert the Musalman into a citizen of the present and the future world from the archaic incongruity that he is today.”

Has anything changed since this bold statement was made by the justices over half a century ago?

Seventeen Canadian Muslims, five of whom are teenagers, were arrested earlier this month in Toronto for conspiring to carry out terrorist attacks in the very country which not only hosted and nurtured them but is also considered a model of multiculturalism and tolerance. Indeed, the province of Ontario recently came close to allowing Muslims to be governed by their own Sharia courts instead of secular civil courts.

At least six of those arrested regularly attended the same mosque in a middle-class Toronto suburb. The oldest, Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, is said to be an active member of the mosque who frequently led prayers and made fiery speeches.

In England, another bastion of multiculturism with a massive and thriving Muslim presence, less than a year after 9/11 Al Qaeda sympathisers were openly selling a video at Birmingham’s Central Mosque after the busy Friday prayers showing the chilling “last will and testament” of one of the September 11 hijackers. Duly impressed, a couple of years later four British Muslims carried out suicide-attacks on London transport killing 52 fellow-Britons and injuring hundreds.

When Abu Musab al Zarqawi was killed in Iraq a week ago, Pakistani parliamentarians belonging to Islamist parties demanded that the National Assembly hold a condolence meeting. The country’s Urdu newspapers are referring to Zarqawi as a martyr for Islam (shaheed). There have been demonstrations in the Palestinian territories hailing him as a hero.

Arabic Islamist chat rooms claim that Zarqawi is in heaven. One wrote: “Oh God, make heaven celebrate his arrival there.” “Oh Allah, reunite us with Abu Musab al Zarqawi in the great paradise alongside Prophet Muhammad [peace be upon him],” wrote another. “Farewell, oh hero,” said an unsigned poem. “We hope to meet you in ... a paradise filled with rivers and sweetness /And beautiful virgins that beckon to us in a unique voice.”

The subject of these fulsome tributes was a man whose barbarity knew no bounds. Zarqawi’s achievements included the “horribly grotesque” beheading of the Jewish-American businessman Nick Berg, in May 2004, publicised in his promotional video titled Sheikh Abu Musab Zarqawi Slaughters an American Infidel.

In another video released by Zarqawi, to quote Paul McGeogh, an award-winning Australian journalist critical of the American occupation of Iraq, “the world was forced to hold its breath as two Americans and a British hostage pleaded for their lives, before Zarqawi himself, according to CIA analysis of the web footage, callously cut the throats of the struggling Americans. Then he roughly decapitated them, holding the heads up for the cameras — and, with a nonchalant twist of the knife, gouged out one of the victim’s eyes.”

A week later, another video showed the British, 62-year-old Kenneth Bigley, “shackled and kneeling in a cage” pleading for his life, but in vain.

The very people who openly or secretly admire Zarqawi will, at the appropriate forums, cite the Quranic verse to the effect that the killing of even one innocent person is tantamount to the killing of all mankind and to emphasise that Islam literally means peace. Those who will not allow any differences of opinion or interpretation even within the Muslim community convene and attend what are called inter-faith dialogues with followers of other faiths, some of whom they regard as errant or misguided and others as evil and sinful.

Muslim clerics freely refer to Muslims leaders who incur their displeasure as taghout (infidels) or Kafir and to followers of all sects other than their own as heretical (bid’ah). Sh’ias are now fair game in Pakistan and the target of a merciless terror campaign in Iraq. In a letter, Zarqawi, the chief of Al Qaeda in Iraq, referred to the Shi’as with his characteristic bluntness: “They are the insurmountable obstacle, the lurking snake, the crafty and malicious scorpion and the penetrating venom ... they are the enemy ... the bone in [our] throats.”

Such is the Salafist doctrine which is gaining popularity among Muslims. Besides rejecting any genuine attempt at understanding, accommodation, coexistence and ijtehad, Salafism bars all joyous pursuits and entertainment (including most games, films and music.

In the heartland of Islam, namely, Saudi Arabia, women can neither vote nor drive, and alleged criminals routinely have their hands, feet and heads chopped off in public squares; in Iran, the Ayatollahs will not allow women to watch men playing soccer; and in Taliban-dominated lands (which includes Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan), alleged criminals have been stoned to death. Here, even fully veiled women cannot leave their homes without being chaperoned by a mehram (close male relative).

In Algeria in the 1990s, Salafists carried out a campaign of slitting the throats of anyone they could catch who was accused of supporting the government, including women and children.

Whenever a terrorist outrage occurs in any Muslim country and the victims are ordinary Muslims, we are told that Muslims must never kill Muslims. Even fatwas are issued to that effect. The unspoken and unwritten subtext seems to suggest that it is acceptable for Muslims to kill non-Muslims, provided there is a pretext.

Many Muslims will go to any lengths to migrate to the West, but, to the Salafists, the West is the evil enemy. The American-educated leader of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, Syed Qutb, stated that “truth and falsehood cannot coexist on earth ... the liberating struggle of jihad does not cease until all religion belongs to God”.

If that is militant, extremist Islam, determined to conquer or destroy all who follow another creed or beg to differ, other varieties are a hodgepodge of obscurantism, ignorance, mythology and mob mentality.

A quiz programme on a mainstream TV network recently asked the contestants to identify the saint (one out of three mentioned) who for 40 years after his death would shake hands with anybody who visited his grave and greeted him. Whatever that means!

Pakistani Muslims are unable to celebrate Eid ul Fitr on the same day because of differences on the issue of sighting the moon strictly in accordance with tradition.

Hundreds of people, including Muslims, have been jailed, in some cases killed, for alleged blasphemy in the last two decades. In one such case about a year ago, the accused included five children, aged between nine and 13. In 2002, one Zahid of Chak Jhumra, a mentally ill person, was stoned to death for blasphemy by a mob instigated by a maulvi after being set free by a court.

Rapists have escaped prosecution for lack of “eye-witnesses” as required by traditional Muslim law. But many victims, including a blind woman who became pregnant as a consequence of being raped, have been convicted of adultery or fornication.

I wonder what the venerable Justices Munir and Kayani would have said about the present state of the ummah. An incongruity wrapped in absurdity?

Whine, snivel, blame others, blame Canada phoneys

Stephen Lautens

Don't blame Canada

In the past few weeks, I've heard some of the yapping social experts say something that really gets my blood boiling.

I heard it in reference to two recent incidents -- the breaking up of an alleged terrorist plot and a sweep in Toronto that arrested a few truckloads of gang members.

What was it the enlightened commentators said that got my goat? When it was pointed out the people accused in each case were immigrants or ethnic minorities, someone leapt to their defence to say it didn't matter if they were immigrants or ethnic or religious minorities, "they were a product of Canadian society," so somehow we're to blame.

My immediate reaction was two short words I never use around my four-year-old. I'll substitute it here with "baloney," although it doesn't have the same ring to it.

In the case of gangs, these are people who shoot at each other over drugs, turf, "respect" or simply wearing the wrong colour bandanna.

The alleged terrorists are reported to have been planning to blow up buildings full of innocent people to prove whose God is greater, and even had the ridiculous idea of cutting off the head of our PM, although you could argue that constitutes hunting small game.

Saying these people are "a product of Canadian society" is supposed to make us all feel responsible, and that if they hadn't grown up in a society that has let them down, they would never be shooting up shopping malls or mixing fertilizer in the basement.

Sorry, but that just doesn't wash.

First of all, it appears many of these people never participated in "Canadian society" in the first place.

They stayed in their own groups and purposefully set themselves apart from other Canadians, our values, hopes and dreams.

It's not as if they weren't invited or had the opportunity to absorb Canadian values. They had the chance to go to school, work and meet daily the millions of Canadians working to make their own dreams happen.

And you know, none of us is dreaming about blowing up buildings or shooting someone.

And, of course, it's tougher for immigrants and minorities. It was tough for my great grandparents, as it would be for me if I up-rooted myself and moved to a different land.

But you won't find a more welcoming country than Canada, or one that works so hard to be supportive, colour-blind or make newcomers feel at home.

You won't find a country that is better at understanding and embracing other cultures, or is more open to the big, wide world.

My Canada is certainly not perfect, but it abhors violence, preaches respect and religious tolerance, values responsibility and hard work and never picks a fight, but watch out when we're forced to.

We think education and family is a good thing, and believe there are more important things than money -- although having a little money is nice, too.

For all our challenges as a country, people are lined up to come here.

That's because we have a good thing going. We have peace, respect and opportunity -- more so than a lot of other countries in the world.

Those are the values of Canadian society, and if someone doesn't grow up with even a few of the most important ones, that's not Canadian society's fault.

It's theirs.

White Gold: The Extraordinary Story of Thomas Pellow and Islam's One Million White Slaves By Giles Milton.

Picador, $15, 336 pp.

The Pirate Coast: Thomas Jefferson, the First Marines, and the Secret Mission of 1805
By Richard Zacks.
Hyperion, $15.95, 454 pp.

Stop me if you've heard this one:

A totalitarian dictator of a Muslim nation kills hundreds of thousands while spending his nation's resources building a palace of mind-boggling size.
European powers toady to a Muslim tyrant who projects his power in provocative ways, preferring to pay him off and do business rather than take action against him - even though they have enough military power to do so.
The American president authorizes a mission to install a friendly government in a hostile Muslim country.
Sleazy French agents undermine the mission and warn the dictator.
An American diplomat whose marriage keeps him well connected scorns the idea that a government friendly to America can be established – or a military mission can succeed – then sets about to cause appeasement and containment.
Marines are left hanging without support in unfriendly territory after a spectacular military success.
Americans take the lead in stopping nation-sponsored terrorism in the Middle East, while the Europeans maintain a safe distance, becoming involved only in mop-up operations and peace negotiations. If you suppose this scenario was taken from recent headlines, think again. Some are the main elements of a nearly 300-year old story, others from America's first shooting war during the Thomas Jefferson administration.

Two instant classics of popular history, Giles Milton's White Gold and Richard Zacks' The Pirate Coast, new in paperback this month, cover this dramatic era in our national past.

Many readers may be surprised to learn the West's battle against militant Islam did not end with the Crusades and not resume until the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. If anything, the century and a half of relative peace between Islamic states and the West that ended in the latter half of the 20th Century was the exception, not the rule.

When Bill Clinton and others justify Arab hatred for the West by hearkening back to the Crusades, they are exercising a selective memory. What they never mention is that, long after the Crusades, Arab pirates sanctioned by North African states kidnapped, murdered, plundered and enslaved Europeans for at least 200 years. Nor, when excoriating America’s tainted history of slavery, do they note that while Western countries were developing modern economies and evolving from mercantilism to capitalism, which ultimately would make their involvement slavery obsolete, slaves continued to be an essential element of the Muslim system. In the 17th and 18th centuries, sea-going raiders from Islamic Mediterranean countries captured and enslaved about 1 million Europeans.

To get European slaves, Arab raiders had to sail great distances and raid the coasts of Britain, France and Spain – countries with established navies and central governments. And while tribal leaders in Africa regularly handed their own people or neighbors captured in war to slavers, no such cooperation existed in European countries. English mayors, for example, were not selling captive Scotsmen they had captured in tribal warfare.

In White Gold, Giles Milton, author of the best-selling historical adventure Nathaniel's Nutmeg, continues his method of illuminating how little-known personages and events had a big effect on history. Like his other books, White Gold is gory, spectacular and enormously entertaining.

After giving a brief overview of the Islamic slave traders' war on Christendom in the 17th and 18th centuries, Milton uses the story of Thomas Pellow to give us a slave's-eye view of the situation. Pellow was an 11-year-old cabin boy when corsairs on a commercial trip to the Mediterranean seized his uncle’s ship in 1716.

The crew was given to King Moulay Ismail of Morocco, who ended the slave trade in his country in a unique way - by demanding all the slaves for himself. Ismail, a brutal and cunning tyrant, established a degree of totalitarianism based on terror that would be unequaled until modern communications technology gave Hitler, Stalin and Mao the ability to control the lives of vast populations.

In his great book, Fear No Evil, Soviet dissident (now Israeli statesman) Natan Sharanski discusses how he and the other dissidents referred to the Gulag as the "Inner Zone" and the rest of the USSR as merely the "Outer Zone" of a continental concentration camp. In White Gold, a European slave makes a similar observation about Morocco – that the rest of the populace was almost enslaved as they were.

Ismail's brand of slavery, however, makes Roots look like Gone with the Wind. He worked his captives to death, mostly constructing a horizontal Tower of Babel stretching a mind-boggling 300 miles that served as a palace.

Although they were in top shape at the time of their capture, Thomas's uncle and most of the crew were worked to death within a few years. Thomas, however, was an uncommonly bright and plucky young lad, and he caught the favor of the tyrant. After being tortured brutally for months, he "converted" to Islam and eventually was rewarded with a position of some importance in Ismail's army.

Despite his privileged life as a top soldier—and becoming a loving husband and father—Pellow spent every day of his 23 years in captivity looking for an opportunity to escape. When he did, he was one of the longest-surviving captives ever to return to England. In an ultimate act of irony, one of his descendants in 1816 accepted the surrender of the dey of Algiers, which ended the white slave trade.

Richard Zacks – whose previous book, Pirate Hunter, will convince you that Captain Kidd was a framed hero, not a murderous buccaneer – takes on the story of Thomas Jefferson and the Barbary Pirates in The Pirate Coast. This is mostly the story of William Eaton, whose exploits put "the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine Corps hymn.

An idealistic veteran of the Revolutionary War veteran, Eaton, as consul to Tripoli, was offended by America’s kowtow to the Barbary Pirates and pay extortion as the price of doing business in the trade-rich Mediterranean.

With great fanfare, President Jefferson sent the pride of the U.S. Navy, the Philadelphia, to the Mediterranean to strike a blow for freedom of the seas. When Capt. William Bainbridge embarrassingly ran the Philadelphia aground in Tripoli Bay while pursuing pirates, he and his crew of over 300 were held hostage for ransom. Bainbridge – later decorated for his role in the affair during the political scramble for cover – still holds the U.S. Navy's record for cowardice. He surrendered not one but two ships in his career with hardly a shot being fired.

Eaton lobbied Jefferson for months for the chance to do something about the U.S. captives. Then he spent several more months seeking the exiled Prince Hamet in Egypt, before finally mounting an army for the mission to install Hamet on his brother's throne in Tripoli.

Meanwhile, the top U.S. diplomat in the region, Tobias Lear – who wed and outlived one niece of George Washington, then married another one – does everything he can to undercut the mission. Jefferson, the revolutionary with a wide streak of pacifism and a grave mistrust of standing armies, listens to Lear and begins backing away from Eaton's objective.

Eaton, however, bulled ahead with his mission against all odds. Accompanied by only eight US Marines, he gathered a rag-tag army pledged to Hamet. While neither nuanced nor diplomatic, Eaton kept his multicultural force together through a brutal 500-mile journey across the Libyan desert by sheer will. But just as ultimate military success was in his reach, Lear -with Jefferson's consent- treacherously pulled it from his grasp.

Ironically, it was Eaton's own partial success along with some feats of daring by Stephen Decatur to scuttle the Philadelphia before it could be used by the Enemy that took the pressure off Jefferson to act, and led to America's first cut and run Jack Murtha-like action.

Feeling betrayed and morally indignant over how Hamet and the Arabs who fought for their liberty were sold out, Eaton was surprised when he returned home to find himself feted as the toast of the nation. Ultimately, however, he could neither play nice nor resist using his new platform to go after Jefferson and expose the truth about the Tripoli mission and the President's role.

The Pirate Coast is a superb historical narrative with flawed heroes, a near-demigod with feet of clay, cynics who scoff at the bravery of their betters, and ordinary people spurred to do great things in the pursuit of liberty. Along with White Gold it provides a great summer read while also providing historical perspective on the Middle East and America's first war against militant Islam.

All over the world of Islam, both in the West and in the world of islam, where women are forced to dress in religious garb, hatred, death, murder and

These women in total cover were photographed coming out of the mosque where the terrorists hatched their plot.

The recently foiled terrorist bomb plot in Canada is a grim reminder that fanatics are still trying to destroy our civilization.

But to read the stories in most newspapers you would never know why these terrorists tried to commit murder. For example, one major newspaper actually reported:

"In investigators' offices, an intricate graph plotting the links between the 17 men and teens charged with being members of a homegrown terrorist cell covers at least one wall. And still, says a source, it is difficult to find a common denominator."

Amazingly, it seems that law enforcement and many in the press are ignoring the fact that the terrorists talked about their crimes in relation to their religion, met at mosques and some members are even known to have preached violent jihad.

The truth is there is a common thread to these attacks. You see, most news outlets have bought into the idea that "True" Islam -- as opposed to the hijackers' "extremist" version -- promotes peace, justice, freedom and tolerance.

The problem with this argument is that it is false and therefore dangerous, since it blinds us to the true nature of the enemy we face.

All over the world of Islam, both in the West and in the world of islam, where women are forced to dress in religious garb, hatred, death, murder and suicideforsex is preached.

A ban on all religious dress in public places would send the worst of the worst scurrying back to their warrens.

Honor killings? Or coward killings?

No honour in killing
Jordan Times ^ | 6-9-06 | Randa Habib

Randa habib’s corner Aren’t you sick and tired of all those so-called “honour killings”?

I fail to see the honour in killing your sister, your daughter, your cousin, your fiancée or your wife... “Man stabs daughter”, “Divorced mother of four, stabbed to death by brother”, “Father bludgeons virgin daughter to death over honour”, “Brother strangles sister in honour killing”, “Man kills sister and fiancée for honour”, “Relatives quizzed over honour killing”, “Teenage runaway killed by brother”, “Man shoots dead cousin in hospital bed in honour killing”, “Woman killed by brothers in new honour crime”.

Such were some of the titles of recent “honour killing” stories that occurred in Jordan. Infuriating, isn’t it?

But worse are titles like: “Reduced jail sentence because he killed his sister in a fit of rage”, or “Killing occurred in order to cleanse family’s honour”. Something has to be done! When girls are put in protective custody, returned to their families after tests prove they were not involved in any sexual activity, only to be bludgeoned by an abusive father, we have a serious problem at hand. When three sisters are killed by their brother just because they dared complain of abuse at home to a local NGO, we also have a serious problem. The Parliament should be ashamed for twice rejecting a proposed change to the penal code that would give the “honour killers” harsher sentences. Parliament has to act responsibly, otherwise killers will continue to go unpunished or get reduced sentences for premeditated murder. Posted by Picasa

Repression and subjegation of women is a sign of a failed society that is incapable ot contributing to civilization in any positive manner

Another Problem: Hold-Outs Among Saudi Women
Lubna Hussain,
My friend’s sister had returned to the Kingdom after an absence of almost two decades. I attended a lunch thrown in her honor and not surprisingly the topic of last week’s article entered the conversation.

“So what happened to you?” inquired one of the guests. “Did you manage to get your travel papers?”

“No, not yet,” I replied feeling rather enervated by the whole process.

“What travel papers?” asked the chief guest. Her sister-in-law narrated the whole incident to her as she listened intently in disbelief. “Are you serious?” she said.

“Yes,” I said glumly and adding feebly, “you have been living in the States for too long.”

“What sort of a response did you get?” asked the gentleman next to me.

“Mostly hate mail,” I confessed. “That’s what is so sad. It seems that what I had written entirely missed the point. I think there were some people who recognized the absurdity of the system, funnily enough even those implementing it themselves. I met one guy who told me that when he went to the airport to drop off his wife and one-year-old daughter, the officer asked him whether he thought it wise to allow his child to travel without a male guardian! A one-year-old baby for goodness sake!”

“You’re joking,” said the gentleman.

“I wish I was,” I replied jadedly. “Another lady I know called me and narrated an interesting incident that happened to her. She went to the airport with her 35-year-old brother and was barred from leaving. The guy was listed on her family card, Islamically speaking is her ‘mahram,’ but as he was not her ‘listed male guardian’ she was not allowed to travel. And then there was a friend of mine who was driving to Bahrain with his mother who is in her late 50s. They were stopped at the border and were being turned back because she didn’t have a paper from her husband. After a bit of cajoling the guy let them through, but he warned my friend severely not to leave his mother in Bahrain. As if!”

“So what’s the solution?” asked another of the guests.

“I don’t know,” I replied earnestly. “I stand accused of haranguing after something that I can seemingly quite easily procure with all my contacts and connections. I am deeply criticized, as usual, for bringing yet another moribund procedure to light. Most likely I will be allowed to travel even if it means resorting to extreme measures but I do not see why I should have to beseech the mercy of individuals when it comes to something as generic and basic as this. What’s more is that I have a conscience. I think of all the other women who may well be in a similar situation and don’t have the privileges I do. Who do they turn to? I am certain that should such a similar situation arise for them it would be tantamount to a disaster. And why? Because no one wants to upset this peculiar status quo? It’s a hard reality that there are many women who don’t want change among us. But is it really fair that this means that all opportunities should be eliminated from the rest of us or would it be more sensible to afford us the choice? Should the natural evolution of any society be held back due to the whims and fancies of certain elements within or should those elements come to terms with the fact that this is the way forward and they have the choice to opt out?”

“I agree with you,” he concurred, “and the whole scenario is totally ridiculous.”

“From my understanding,” volunteered an elderly ex-ambassador, “it would be far easier if you just got married. You know? All those marriages that you can do these days. Just find someone, marry him and get him to sign off on that bit of paper you need,” he concluded.

This suggestion had been made by everyone who had anything to do with the dilemma from the facilitator to his secretary to the peon at the passport office. Such an easy solution. Find an idiot on the street (I’d be spoilt for choice), pay him a bit of money, enter into a “friendship marriage,” get the travel permission signed, dump the idiot on the street and leave. Hey presto! What a wonderfully practical solution. What’s absolutely shocking about the whole concept is that this is what women have been reduced to in our society. It’s unthinkable for a woman to try to function as an independent entity irrespective of her capabilities, inclinations, or preferences. In fact, judging by the responses that I received it is wholly deplorable for a woman to even think of traveling by herself even if she is going to meet her parents. Yet it is considered noble and pragmatic for her to enter into such a phony baloney marriage in order to do exactly the same thing under some masquerade of “protection.”

In one of my previous articles I had maligned the whole concept of marriages of convenience. Now I am being forced to recognize their importance and integral necessity within our current societal framework. I think that it is a great shame that the sanctimony of marriage has taken such a backseat in favor of the bureaucracy of man. If we are truly serious about reform and progress then such regressive tools of male hegemony need to be buried once and for all and women need to be reinstated to their rightful position as ordained by God.

Ayatollah Khomeni's Grandson Calls on Bush to 'Occupy' Iran
Al Seyassah, Kuwait ^ | June 2, 2006 | Nicolas Dagher

Ayatollah Hossein Khomeini , grandson of Ruhollah Al Khomeini, the founder of the Iranian Republic, has said that his country is living under a religious dictatorship, governed by the mullahs. He also defended his call for President Bush to invade Iran!

During an interview with the news Web site, Hossein Khomeini called for the liberation of Iran from religious rule and Al-Fakih [rule by the most learned of Islam] and said that the revolution, which was led by his grandfather against the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979, had devoured its children.

[Editor's Note: Al-Faqih is the doctrine of The Guardianship of the Jurists, which means that those most knowledgeable about Islamic law should assume a leading political role in society.].

This was a rare interview with Hossein Khomeini, who has avoided the media since touring Iran three years ago and annoying the Iranian government with some of his comments. Khomeini said that he knows that his contacts and movements are under surveillance.

In view of the heated confrontation between his country and the international community over the nuclear issue, Khomeini said that Iran, "would be powerful if freedom and a democratic society were being developed there, rather than weapons and the bomb."

Khomeini also said that he opposes the Al-Fakih rule and would never accept the authority of a ruler under Al-Fakih. He added that if he came to power, the first law that he would implement would make wearing of hijab [headscarf] a personal decision for women.

He said, "by forcing women to wear the strictest, black-colored hajibs, instead of allowing those of different colors, the religious authorities in Iran are unduly restricting women. Even though I personally support the wearing of some form of hijab, when female students come out of schools and colleges covered in black, it just makes your heart sick. The hijab issue is a personal matter. If a woman wants it she can wear it, and if she refuses it, she doesn't have to. My grandfather Khomeini had lots of relatives that didn't wear the hijab."

Hossein Khomeini observed that, "my grandfather's revolution devoured its sons and lost its way." He said that when the revolution took place it did not intend to install the Fakih rule, but that all this changed because of the religious thinking that was predominant in religious societies and schools.

He said that the revolution used to call for freedom and democracy, but instead it persecuted its leaders. People like Al Sayyid Al Talkani, who was often imprisoned during the Shah's regime. After the revolution he opposed the breaking of laws and suffered tremendously, having to go in hiding full of sadness over of his actions.

He also condemned the revolutionary tribunals, which continue to practice persecution and beatings in an arbitrary and disorganized fashion. Al Talkani's family was also targeted.

It is well known that the most famous leaders of the Iranian revolution either opposed it afterwards, like Massoud Rajavi who was sentenced to death, or fled the country, like Bani Sadr, or mysteriously disappeared, like Montazeri, Rajaii and Bahchati.

About his call for U.S President George W. Bush to occupy Iran, Hossein Khomeini clarified: "freedom should be promoted in Iran in any way possible, and it is irrelevant whether this freedom comes as the result of domestic or foreign developments. If I were imprisoned, what does it matter? It is in my interests that someone come and break me out of that prison."

In regard to his meeting with the son of the deposed Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, Khomeini said it was an ordinary meeting between two people who share the suffering over a singular problem, which is tyranny, even though each of us comes at it from a different angle."

In his hometown, relatives pray for 1,000 Zarqawis

ZARQA, Jordan (Reuters) - In the bleak Jordanian city where Abu Musab al-Zarqawi grew up, shocked relatives mourned the al Qaeda leader's death as a loss to Islam and prayed for 1,000 "Zarqawis" to fight the Americans in his place.

"This is a tragedy. We are all sad here," said Zarqawi's uncle, Yazm Khalayleh, 64.

"We have to be sad because he was fighting the infidels. Anyone who says he is not sad is lying; people believe he is a martyr. We do not want to believe that he is dead."

Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a U.S. air raid there, Iraqi and U.S. officials said on Thursday.

The Jordanian, who masterminded hundreds of suicide bombings in Iraq and was blamed for the videotaped beheadings of foreign hostages, had come to symbolise the radical Islamic insurgency against U.S.-led forces occupying Iraq.

Relatives and neighbors hailed Zarqawi as a hero of Islam and hoped his death would not impede the insurgency in Iraq.

"God willing there will be 1,000 Zarqawis to fight the Americans," another relative, Ahmed Khalayleh, told Reuters.

Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

Arab-American Psychiatrist Wafa Sultan: There is No Clash of Civilizations but a Clash between the Mentality of the Middle Ages and That of the 21st Century

Following are excerpts from an interview with Arab-American psychiatrist Wafa Sultan. The interview was aired on Al-Jazeera TV on February 21, 2006

. Wafa Sultan: The clash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions, or a clash of civilizations. It is a clash between two opposites, between two eras. It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on other hand. It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts, and those who treat them like human beings. What we see today is not a clash of civilizations. Civilizations do not clash, but compete.

Host: I understand from your words that what is happening today is a clash between the culture of the West, and the backwardness and ignorance of the Muslims?

Wafa Sultan: Yes, that is what I mean.

Host: Who came up with the concept of a clash of civilizations? Was it not Samuel Huntington? It was not Bin Laden. I would like to discuss this issue, if you don't mind...

Wafa Sultan: The Muslims are the ones who began using this expression. The Muslims are the ones who began the clash of civilizations. The Prophet of Islam said: "I was ordered to fight the people until they believe in Allah and His Messenger." When the Muslims divided the people into Muslims and non-Muslims, and called to fight the others until they believe in what they themselves believe, they started this clash, and began this war. In order to stop this war, they must reexamine their Islamic books and curricula, which are full of calls for takfir and fighting the infidels.

My colleague has said that he never offends other people's beliefs. What civilization on the face of this earth allows him to call other people by names that they did not choose for themselves? Once, he calls them Ahl Al-Dhimma, another time he calls them the "People of the Book," and yet another time he compares them to apes and pigs, or he calls the Christians "those who incur Allah's wrath." Who told you that they are "People of the Book"? They are not the People of the Book, they are people of many books. All the useful scientific books that you have today are theirs, the fruit of their free and creative thinking. What gives you the right to call them "those who incur Allah's wrath," or "those who have gone astray," and then come here and say that your religion commands you to refrain from offending the beliefs of others?

I am not a Christian, a Muslim, or a Jew. I am a secular human being. I do not believe in the supernatural, but I respect others' right to believe in it.

Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouli: Are you a heretic?

Wafa Sultan: You can say whatever you like. I am a secular human being who does not believe in the supernatural...

Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouli: If you are a heretic, there is no point in rebuking you, since you have blasphemed against Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran...

Wafa Sultan: These are personal matters that do not concern you.

Wafa Sultan: Brother, you can believe in stones, as long as you don't throw them at me. You are free to worship whoever you want, but other people's beliefs are not your concern, whether they believe that the Messiah is God, son of Mary, or that Satan is God, son of Mary. Let people have their beliefs.

Wafa Sultan: The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror, with their work, not their crying and yelling. Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble. We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a Mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

the black community here converting to Islam is like converting voluntarily to slavery

The great Hirsi Ali:

True to her gloves-off approach, Hirsi Ali talked about how Muhammad, who had nine wives, fell in love with his wife Aisha when she was 6 and married her when she was 9. Hirsi Ali outraged Dutch Muslims by accusing Muhammad of pedophilia.

Hirsi Ali says some took the issue seriously. She emphasizes its relevance because "there are more and more men taking minors as wives, and saying that Muhammad is their example."

Hirsi Ali says the debate gave her hope - she received one letter from a Muslim that read, "I don't know what you started in me, but I am thinking... . "

In the same way, Hirsi Ali explains, she'd like to challenge the beliefs of Black Muslims in America. She finds it as unfathomable that African Americans would convert to Islam as that Jews would convert to Nazism.

"I want to tell them about Darfur," she asserts firmly. "The people in Darfur are being exterminated just because they are black. So [Islam] is also a racist doctrine... . People don't know what's going on in Saudi Arabia. All these palaces are full of black slaves! So the black community here converting to Islam is like converting voluntarily to slavery.

"I think if they hear it from a black person," she says hopefully, "it will help."

ape (ap) [n.]

A monkey.
A mimic or imitator.

tr.v., aped, ap·ing, apes.

To mimic slavishly but often with an absurd result.

(source: The American Heritage Dictionary)

You must have witnessed them. They live in your neighborhoods they walk in your malls. Trousers pulled up to their ankles, disheveled, unkempt beards, usually wearing loose clothes, with a mark on their forehead and a skullcap on their head. A draped fully cloistered wife might accompany them. The wife walks behind the male. In the west, they will look at you with loathing. These are the followers of the cult of Muhammad. They consider him the last prophet and follow his teachings slavishly. Every word of their prophet must be followed literally; to do what he did is the true path to heavenly rewards. So to truly understand their psychology one must take a critical look at Muhammad’s teachings, to understand the dangerous consequences of his teachings, and the dimensions of this frightening threat that faces us in the 21st century, one must understand the mindset of these cultists.

To understand Muhammad’s teachings one needs to read verses from the Quran, which are his own words, unchanged unaltered over the centuries. To further understand the psyche of the individuals who ape this person we need to look at the Hadith, which is believed to be the accurate sayings and actions of Muhammad as dictated by his companions, and hence tremendously important to the Mohammedans. The Quran and Hadith together shape the life of the Muslim and provide guidance and his raison d’etre. Let us look at some of the sayings covering two topics: women and non-Muslims. The rationale for this selection is simple; A precondition for any progressive civilization is equality of the sexes and the rule of fair lawful practices for all of it’s inhabitants. (for examples of absurd Islamic scriptures in other spheres of life try or )

On Women

Your women are a tilt for you (to cultivate) so go to your tilt as ye will, and send (good deeds) before you for your souls, and fear Allah, and know that ye will (one day) meet Him. Give glad tidings to believers, (O Muhammad) 2:223

and get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her. 2:282

Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice. 4:3

Allah (thus) directs you as regards your Children's (Inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females. 4:11-12

Also (prohibited are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess. 4:24

Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great. 4:34

Prophet, We have made lawful to you those of your wives, whose dowers you have paid, and those women who come into your possession out of the slave-girls granted by Allah, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts, and of your maternal uncles and aunts, who have migrated with you, and the believing woman who gives herself to the Prophet, if the Prophet may desire her. This privilege is for you only, not for the other believers. 33:50:O

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 33:

Narrated Usama bin Zaid: The Prophet said, "After me I have not left any affliction more harmful to men than women."

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 31:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: Evil omen was mentioned before the Prophet: The Prophet said, "If there is evil omen in anything, it is in the house, the woman and the horse."

Volume 7, Book 62, Number 122:

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "If a woman spends the night deserting her husband's bed (does not sleep with him), then the angels send their curses on her till she comes back (to her husband)."

Volume 4, Book 54, Number 460:

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "If a husband calls his wife to his bed (i.e. to have sexual relation) and she refuses and causes him to sleep in anger, the angels will curse her till morning."

Volume 2, Book 18, Number 161:

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas: By then, the sun (eclipse) had cleared. The Prophet then said, "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They eclipse neither because of the death of somebody nor because of his life (i.e. birth). So when you see them, remember Allah." The people say, "O Allah's Apostle! We saw you taking something from your place and then we saw you retreating." The Prophet replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Why is it so?" The Prophet replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable) in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.' "

Volume 1, Book 6, Number 301:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: Once Allah's Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) o 'Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Allah's Apostle?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion."

1. It is forbidden for a woman to be seen by any man except her husband when she is made up or well dressed. (TR. P 430)

2. A woman is not a believer if she undertakes a journey which may last three days or longer, unless she is accompanied by her husband, son, father or brother. (TR. P 431)

3. A woman must veil herself even in the presence of her husband's father, brother and other male relations. (TR. P 432)

4. She is forbidden to spend any money without the permission of her husband, and it includes giving food to the needy or feast to friends. (TR. P 265)

5. A wife is forbidden to perform extra prayers (NAFAL) or observe fasting (other than RAMADAN) without the permission of her husband. (TR. P 300)

6. If prostration were a legitimate act other than to God, woman should have prostrated to her husband. (TR. P 428)

7. If a man is in a mood to have sexual intercourse woman must come immediately even if she is baking bread at a communal oven. (TR. P 428)

8. The marriage of woman to her man is not substantive. It is precarious. For example if the father of the husband orders his son to divorce his wife, he must do so. (TR. P 440)

9. Majority of women would go to hell. (Muslim P 1431)

10. If a woman refuses to come to bed when invited by her husband, she becomes the target of the curses of angels. Exactly the same happens if she deserts her husband's bed. (Bokhari P 93)

11. The women who are ungrateful to their men, are the denizens of hell; it is an act of ingratitude for a woman to say: "I have never seen any good from you." (Bokhari P 96)

12. A woman in many ways is deprived of the possession of her own body. Even her milk belongs to her husband. (Bokhari P 27)

On Non-Muslims

Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war. 9:5

Fight those who do not believe until they all surrender, paying the protective tax in submission. 9:29

Fight them until all opposition ends and all submit to Allah. 8:39

Fight them and Allah will punish them by your hands, lay them low, and cover them with shame. He will help you over them. 9:14

So fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief [non-Muslims]) and all submit to the religion of Allah alone (in the whole world). 8:39

O Prophet, urge the faithful to fight. If there are twenty among you with determination they will vanquish two hundred; if there are a hundred then they will slaughter a thousand unbelievers, for the infidels are a people devoid of understanding. 8:65

Wherever you are, death will find you, even if you are in towers strong and high! So what is wrong with these people, that they fail to understand these simple words? 4:78

He said, ‘Fight them so that there is no more rebellion, and religion, all of it, is for Allah only. Allah must have no rivals.’ Ishaq:324

Our onslaught will not be a weak faltering affair. We shall fight as long as we live. We will fight until you turn to Islam, humbly seeking refuge. We will fight not caring whom we meet. We will fight whether we destroy ancient holdings or newly gotten gains. We have mutilated every opponent. We have driven them violently before us at the command of Allah and Islam. We will fight until our religion is established. And we will plunder them, for they must suffer disgrace. Ishaq:587

Our Prophet, the Messenger of our Lord, ordered us to fight you till you worship Allah alone or pay us the Jizyah tribute tax in submission. Our Prophet has informed us that our Lord says: ‘Whoever amongst us is killed as a martyr shall go to Paradise to lead such a luxurious life as he has never seen, and whoever survives shall become your master.’ Bukhari:V4B53N386

The unbelieving infidels are allies. Unless you (Muslims) aid each other (fighting as one united block to make Allah’s religion victorious), there will be confusion and mischief. Those who accepted Islam, left their homes to fight in Allah’s Cause (al-Jihad), as well as those who give them asylum, shelter, and aid these are (all) Believers: for them is pardon and bountiful provision (in Paradise). 8:73

Crushing the heads of the infidels and splitting their skulls with sharp swords, we continually thrust and cut at the enemy. Blood gushed from their deep wounds as the battle wore them down. We conquered bearing the Prophet’s fluttering war banner. Our cavalry was submerged in rising dust, and our spears quivered, but by us the Prophet gained victory. Ishaq 578

For a 21st century sane, rational human the above verses must be bewildering and frightening. One wonders how anyone in his or her right mind can take these seriously. What is most frightening is that 1.2 billion Mohammedans take these to be the literal word of God!

So how would an ardent practitioner of the cult of Islam psychologically shape up to view this world. For one he would consider women inferior nothing more than chattel, and two all non-muslims would need to be converted, subjugated or killed. A good example of an ape-man is here to observe for yourself: or look at some of these :

Muhammad was an opportunist. Early on he married a rich older divorcee which effectively relieved him of any further labors and financial worries. He was a power hungry warmonger. Coming from a region which was a waypoint for caravans and which catered to a plethora of Gods, he understood the power of religion over men. He also understood the power of the sword, which he used very effectively against an established sophisticated culture. He was a lustful megalomaniac who married his adopted son’s wife and the 9-year-old daughter of his best friend! He was mentally unstable with bouts of sweating, hallucinations and an attempt at suicide. Any words and teachings that this man would utter would be a reflection of his character.

The West has not grasped the danger that this pedophiles ranting have placed upon our modern world. A world where biological weapons can be invented in a small house with a small budget or where whole cities can be incinerated in the blink of an eye, and where these ape-men of Muhammad consider it their religious duty to destroy all that we have built over the centuries of toil. They are beyond bargaining or reasoning. The West must comprehend that Live and let Live cannot be practiced with a people who believe in Live and let Die...
