Cultural linchpin laws needed

Cleric’s chilling warning to UK

A FANATICAL Pakistani cleric told The Sun yesterday of his chilling dream to turn the world Muslim – by force if necessary. Qari Hifzur Rehamn, 60, spoke openly of imposing Islamic law’s stoning and beheading on Britain – as Pakistan was rocked by unrest over the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. He warned: “We want Islamic law for all Pakistan and then the world. “We would like to do this by preaching. But if not then we would use force.”

Bloodless cultural linchpin laws all over the West will instantly moderate extremism

In Search of Moderate Muslims

Ever since his first post-9/11 speech summoning the nation to a war against terrorism, President Bush has stressed that “our war is against evil, not against Islam.” Indeed, his administration has branded the terrorists as “traitors to their own faith”—outlaws who are “trying, in effect, to hijack Islam itself.”

There is no reason to doubt the sincerity of such pronouncements. But they also reflect a strategic imperative—namely, to prevent the jihadists from attracting wide support in the Muslim world. The goal of Bush’s policy is, rather, to call forth the Muslim majority against the acts and ideology of the terrorists. As the Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes has put it: “radical Islam is the problem and moderate Islam the solution.”

This is one facet of U.S. policy on which there has been virtually no dissent. But it begs the question: what exactly is moderate Islam, and where can we find it?

Sexual apartheid a recipe for extremism and brutality towards females

Iran: School textbooks latest target of sexual apartheid

Tehran, 25 Jan. (AKI) - Iranian authorities are looking at new restrictions that will create different school textbooks for boys and girls.

Ali Reza Ali Ahmadi, responsible to the interim public education minister, told a seminar on textbooks there was a need to provide students with books according to "the requirements of age and sex" to satisfy their particular needs.

"The spiritual, physical, and mental needs of boys and girls are not identical, and therefore textbooks that give them information cannot be the same," Ali Ahmadi told the seminar.

Christian 'infidels' to eat 'Muhammad'
Political TV hosts fed up with PC Islam will devour cookie with face of prophet

This cookie with a depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad will be eaten on 'Flamethrower,' a new political program on Faith TV

A new, cutting-edge, political TV show will challenge Islam with biting humor tomorrow night, placing the face of the prophet Muhammad onto a cookie and then having it eaten on camera.

"We're going to take a stand and say Muhammad's face is delicious," said Molotov Mitchell, the 28-year-old incendiary creator and host of "Flamethrower," a program described as a low-budget, gritty cross between the "The Daily Show," "The Colbert Report," and "The View" if Ann Coulter were the producer. "This is religious and culinary history in the making."

The theme of this week's episode is "All Things Islam," as panelists take on the faith of Muslims in a no-holds-barred fashion.

"Islam is not even a religion," Mitchell told WND from a location somewhere in Eastern North Carolina. "It's an ideology of 'might makes right' disguised as a religion. We're going to show that Allah was with us when we baked this cookie and ate it. Deal with it!"

Mitchell and his fellow panelists – all of whom are Christians in their 20s and whom he calls the next generation of conservatism – are trying to make the point that America is still a free country, and there's no need to cower in fear from Islamo-fascism. He laments the frequency of Islamic suicide bombings, giving a new twist to a famous line from "It's a Wonderful Life," by stating, "Every time a bell rings, a Muhammad gets his wives."

In recent years, European cartoons featuring Muhammad have caused a tidal wave of violent protests and death threats, as Islamic tradition bans depictions of the prophet.

Molotov Mitchell, the Christian creator of 'Flamethrower,' irreverently sinks his teeth into a cookie featuring a depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad

"What were doing is exercising our freedom of speech and freedom of the press to the fullest in order to challenge a tyrannical, oppressive system that has doomed the cultures and countries of the Middle East for centuries," Mitchell told WND. "Now it's trying to invade our borders, and somebody has to speak up about it."

In its two previous episodes, "Flamethrower" has taken on subjects including "Is it ethical to kill abortionists?" and "Let's invade Mexico" – not to stay, but just to get rid of the drug cartels.

There's also a regular segment titled, "WWMD? (What Would Muhammad Do?)"

In it, cast members dress in traditional Muslim clothing and deliver "totally atrocious" real news items, recounting, says Mitchell, "what some jerk named Muhammad did this week."

"I'm not going to be hurt and insulted. I'm going to ask people to ignore this," said Iftekhar Hai, president of United Muslims of America Interfaith Alliance in South San Francisco. "They would dare not do it to any Jewish person, saying 'the Jews killed Jesus.' The Jewish lobby would slaughter the Christians if they did that."

"I don't think this is part of the American character," Hai added, "but it has become part of the American tradition to only pick on Muslims."

Mitchell says politics is the driving force of his show, saying, "The [Christian] church really doesn't seem to get it when it comes to politics. The church likes to ask, 'What would Jesus do?' But it often suggests Jesus would hug somebody for every situation, and that's not what Jesus would do. I'd rather ask, 'What would George Washington do?'"

A video teaser for the program offers a sample exchange between Mitchell and Fox News host Alan Colmes.

"Muhammad murdered people and he married a 9-year-old. That makes him a murdering pedophile," said Mitchell. "I don't think that we should burn the Quran. I'm a Christian environmentalist. We should put that thing to use. I mean, at least get some toilet paper out of it."

"Your kind of attitude is a really despicable attitude," responded Colmes.

'Flamethrower' features a young cast describing itself as the next generation of conservatism

Mitchell's 27-year-old wife says she's "totally fine" with the concept of "Flamethrower."

"At first, I was a little scared," she admitted. "But I'm a Christian, and we shouldn't fear to lose our lives. We're in America, and we have a free voice here, and we want it to stay that way."

The hour-long show airs Friday nights on Faith TV on the Sky Angel Network, channel 9708, at 7 p.m. Eastern, and the complete cookie segment is expected to be posted on the video-sharing site YouTube immediately after tomorrow night's airing.

Mitchell says the show has already been recorded, so it would pointless for any would-be assassin to target him.

"Even if you kill us, the cookie will still be eaten on the air," he said.

Rights Activist Criticizes Middle Eastern Men; Says Condition of Saudi Women Worse than Guantanamo

"This Saudi Patriarchal Culture Has Become Prevalent under Religious Guise"

Wajiha Al-Huweidar: "We have raised a generation - I think it began with my own generation - on the belief that we are a special people, that we are the cradle of Islam, that the truth is ours and ours alone, that we are the Saved Sect of Islam. People have begun to believe all these lies, and they use them as pretexts. When we demanded that women be employed in public workplaces, they say: 'No, we are a special people.' When we demand that women be allowed to drive, they say: 'No, we are a special people.' No, we are not. In what way are we special? There is nothing special about us. True, we have the two holy cities - Mecca and Al-Madina - but this does not mean that we have a monopoly on religion, and that we are the only Muslims in the world.

Rs 5,000 fine impose in Pak for shaving beard

Islamabad, January 17: A radical Islamic group in Pakistan’s Khyber Agency bordering Afghanistan has warned that any man shaving his beard will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000.

Haji Namdar, the chief of the Tanzim Bilmaroof (group for promotion of virtue), announced a ban on shaving in a broadcast made on Wednesday from his illegal FM radio station.

“Shaving the beard is forbidden in Islam and I feel duty-bound to make every Muslim of my tribe sport a beard,” said Namdar.

The Tanzim Bilmaroof had earlier imposed fines for various acts it says are against the teachings of Islam. This includes a fine of Rs 50,000 for owning a dish antenna for receiving satellite TV broadcasts and a fine of Rs 500 for not praying five times a day.

The group has also banned listening to music and watching TV. It has also imposed a fine of Rs 500 for each audio cassette found in any person’s possession. Volunteers of the Tanzim Amr Bilmaroof have severely beaten tribesmen who do not cover their heads.

The best thing that could happen to all of Islam is for all muslims worldwide to abandon the headscarf, a symbol of KKK type apartheid

Islamic headscarf debate intensifies

ONE of Turkey's top prosecutors objected to a government plan to lift a ban on the Islamic headscarf in universities.

"To place the use of an article of clothing into the scope of basic freedoms... will polarise students... and transform educational institutions into hives of activity against the secular, unitarian system," chief prosectuor of the High Court of Appeals Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya said.

"Political parties cannot aim to change the secular nature of the Republic," he said. "It is obvious that using religion as a basis to define freedoms... will lead to polarisation and confrontation."

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) has said he intends to abolish the ban as part of a planned new constitution.

No go enclaves of hatred and violence will encourage extremism and are a danger to muslims as well as non muslims

Muslims must do more to integrate, says poll

A majority of Britons believe that Muslims need to do more to integrate into society and want tighter restrictions on immigration, an opinion poll commissioned by The Sunday Telegraph shows.

However, the population is divided about whether the breakdown between communities has reached such a level that there are "no-go areas" for non-Muslims.

The poll comes at the end of a week in which Muslim integration has been pushed to the top of the political agenda following an article in The Sunday Telegraph by the Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, who claimed that Islamic extremism in Britain had created no-go areas.

How many brutalized young girls in America are being subjected to this horrific abuse (should be renamed castration)?

The unspeakable practice of female circumcision (castration) that's destroying young women's lives in Britain

Femail Genital mutilation: (66,000) of British-African girls have been forcibly 'cut' (castrated)

The girl is 15 years old but looks much younger. Her face has the fine-boned elegance typical of her native Somalia, but her accent belongs to the streets of East London. She is plainly terrified. That much is clear from the way she avoids eye contact and constantly fidgets in her chair.

"Promise you won't print my name or anything?" she implores repeatedly. "Promise no one will ever know that I've spoken to you? If people in my community find out, they'll say that I've betrayed them and I'll have to run away. And anyway, I don't want my parents to be sent to jail."

With great courage, this British-Somali girl - she asks that we call her "Lali" - is about to describe a barbaric act of ritualised cruelty which has been perpetrated against her. Knowing the danger to which she is exposing herself, her anxiety is entirely understandable.

Religious glorification of beheading is a step towards brainwashing vulnerable youth to become murderers

How to Behead' poem posted online draws fire

Two Canadian Jewish groups are inviting a Muslim counterpart to stand with them against a shocking poem featured on the website IslamOnline.

The poem is called: "How to Behead."

Graphically describing how to decapitate a captive, the verse is the work of Samina Malik, 23, the self-styled "lyrical terrorist" who two months ago became the first Muslim woman in Britain convicted on terrorism charges.

Her poems include "How to Behead" and "Beheading – How it Feels" – writings that helped draw her a nine-month suspended jail sentence.

"Obscene," Canadian Jewish Congress leader Bernie Farber called the posting yesterday.

"This goes beyond what even (deported Toronto hate-monger Ernst) Zundel could have come up with," said Jewish Defence League national director Meir Weinstein.

Both are calling on the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, based in Ottawa, to cease its connection to the site and join them in denouncing the posting.

Council board member Jamal Badawi, a professor emeritus at St. Mary's University in Halifax, contributes regularly to Qatar-based

"Anybody who puts his name to a website that can be seen to be supporting this kind of writing should be ashamed of themselves," Farber said in a telephone interview.

"Either Dr. Badawi is not aware of it, or now that he is aware, I would hope he will immediately condemn it and walk away," Farber said.

"If not, one would have to make the – I think legitimate – assumption that he is in support of the kind of positions taken on that website."

Badawi did not return calls or emails.

Council spokesperson Sameer Zuberi said the council considers the poem "repulsive" and noted it has asked the website's administrators to remove the poem. IslamOnline features the poem on its arts and literature page, inviting comment but offering no view of its own.

The Canadian branch of the Washington D.C.-based Council on American-Islamic Relations says it aims to "help shape an accurate understanding of Islam."

A frightening article that depicts a frightening mindset: why islamic extremism depends on the subjugation of it's women

There must be violence against women

This title may sound strange, but it’s actually not just a way to attract readers to the topic because I really do mean what it indicates. Violence is a broad term, especially when used regarding women. In this piece, I want to shed light on those instances where violence against women is a must.

First, we should know the meaning of the word violence. Longman’s Dictionary of Contemporary English defines violence as “behavior that is intended to hurt other people physically.” However, the term violence mustn’t be confused with other concepts and terms such as gender inequality or absence of women rights.

Occasionally – if not daily – we hear about events occurring in Islamic and Arab societies. Some human rights organizations recently have attacked violent acts against women, standing against any type of violence – even that between a father and daughter – and citing the cases of some women as examples.

Consequently, they offer solutions such as complaining to the police, taking revenge or leaving them men, who are either their husbands, fathers or brothers – with no exceptions.

One such case involved a woman whose husband allegedly had beaten her. Without revealing the husband’s reasons for doing so, such human rights organizations immediately urged the wife to complain to the police and the courts, while at the same time generalizing the instance and other similar solutions to any type of violence.

If a man and woman are husband and wife, the Qur’an provides solutions, firstly reaffirming any logical and acceptable reasons for such punishment. These solutions are in gradual phases and not just for women, but for men also.

For men, it begins with abandoning the marital bed, by opting to sleep elsewhere in the house. After this, they may discuss the matter with any respected person for the husband’s or the wife’s family, who could be in a position to advise the wife. If this also does not work, then the husband yields to beating the wife slightly. They do this because of a misunderstanding in the Quran, as the word says Darban, which is commonly understood today as beating. However, in Classic Arabic it means to set examples or to announce and proclaim. The more accurate meaning of this last one is that the husband finally has to set forth, to make a clear statement or proclamation, and if these measures fail, then divorce is preferable.

Similarly, wives may take actions such as abandoning the marital bed, following by leaving the husband’s home for that of their parents, brothers or any other relatives. They may do this more than once, but if such action fails, they may not continue to live with their husband and via their relatives, they may request a divorce.

Despite such instructions, beating is considered a type of violence, according to human rights organizations, which urge women to complain to the police. I just wonder what kind of families our societies would have if Muslim women started doing this regarding their husbands.

Relationships between fathers and daughters or sisters and brothers also provoke argument from human rights organizations, which propose the suggested solutions for all relationships. Personally, I don’t think fathers or brothers would undertake such behavior unless there was a reason for it.

Fathers are responsible for their daughters’ behavior, but human rights organizations deny this too. Brothers also should take action regarding their sisters’ behavior, especially if their parents are too old or dead. If a daughter or sister makes a mistake – especially a moral one – that negatively affects the entire family and its reputation, what’s the solution by such organizations?

According to them, women should complain to the courts about any type of violence against them. Likewise, should fathers and brothers complain to police if their daughters or sisters violate moral, Islamic or social norms?

Fathers should handle their daughters via any means that suits their mistake; thus, is it better to use violence to a certain limit or complain to the police? Shall such women then complain to the police against their fathers or brothers? It’s really amazing to hear this.

In some cases, violence is necessary, but there must be limits. Those “good human rights organizations” don’t make any exceptions in their solutions because their aim is to serve society. Will it be a better society once we see wives, mothers, sisters and daughters going from one police station and one court to another, complaining against their husbands, fathers, brothers and even sons?

As the proverb goes, “If the speaker is mad, the listener should be mindful.” This proverb is good advice for every man and woman not only to keep their ears open, but also to avoid the misleading propaganda of such organizations, whose surface aims hide other destructive ones to destroy society’s religious, social and moral norms. This matter requires consideration.

Dear readers – especially women – don’t think that I hate or am against women; rather, I simply mean to preserve the morals and principles with which Islam has honored us.

I hope my message is clear, since it’s really quite relevant to the future of our societies, which must be protected from any kind of cultural invasion.

Cultural moderataion badly needed

Afghan boy dancers sexually abused by former warlords

PUL-E KHUMRI, Afghanistan (Reuters) - They are known as "bacha bereesh", boys without beards, teenage boys who dress up as girls and dance for male patrons at parties in northern Afghanistan.

It's an age old practice that has led to some of the boy dancers being turned into sex slaves by wealthy and powerful patrons, often former warlords, who dress the boys up as girls, shower them with gifts and keep them as "mistresses".

Afghan police are battling to crackdown on the practice which has angered Islamic clerics who say those involved should be stoned for sodomy, forbidden under Islamic law.

In a society where the sexes are strictly segregated, it is common for men to dance for other men at weddings in Afghanistan.

But in northern Afghanistan, former warlords and mujahideen commanders have taken that a step further with competitions for their dancing boys.

"Every boy tries to be the first. They are dressed in women's clothes, have bells on their feet and have artificial breasts," said Mohammad Yawar, a former mujahideen fighter against the Taliban and resident of the northern town of Pul-e Khumri.

The practice, called "bacha bazi" -- literally "boy play" -- has a long history in northern Afghanistan, but sometimes it does not stop with just dancing.

"I very much enjoy hugging a boy. His smell and fragrance kills me," said Yawar.

The 38-year-old businessman said he recruited a 15-year-old boy three years ago to help him with his work.

Allowing vicious South Africa style apartheid zones in the West is a recipe for escalating violence

Segregation: Muslim Style

Where there are large concentrations of Muslims in England, "no-go" zones are being established and, according to the Rt. Rev. Michael Nazir-Ali, the Church of England's Bishop of Rochester, non-Muslims who "trespass" in such neighborhoods risk attack. He writes in The Sunday Telegraph that a spiritual vacuum in Britain, along with indifference to the rise of Islamic extremism and a growing "multi-faith" society, is robbing the nation of its Christian identity. The General Synod also believes that Britain is being damaged by uncontrolled immigration. Bishop Nazir-Ali warns of attempts to give Britain an increasingly Islamic character by introducing the call to prayer and Sharia law, blaming the government's "novel philosophy of multiculturalism." Anyone who has studied Islamic societies (as Bishop Nazir-Ali has, having been part of one) knows segregation and subjugation of non-Muslims is the norm, not the behaviour of an "extremist fringe." Unless something is done to slow, even reverse Muslim immigration, Britain, as we've known it, will be lost and radical Islam will remake Britain in its own image.

Time to demand churches built in mosem countries, and stop destroying christian and other churches in muslim countries! excellent bloodless linchpin

Demonstrators to demand mosques in exchange for churches

A demonstration is being organised for the weekend by Stop Islamization of Europe (SIOE) to protest the building of large mosques in Europe while some majority-Muslim countries continue to refuse the construction of churches and other non-Islamic places of worship within their own borders.

Organisers of the event said, “No more mosques in the European Union until we see churches, temples and synagogues in Mecca,” according to the US-based persecution watchdog Christian Freedom International (CFI).

The media have criticised SIOE for “intolerance” and showing a “lack of secularist globalist thinking”.

Organisers of the event said that the date for the demonstration was chosen as it was the closest Saturday to Saint Nicholas Day, which is widely celebrated in the south of France.

There are currently plans to build a large mosque in Marseilles as well as in other major cities in Europe and the USA.

SIOE considers the building of such mosques to be one of the tactics used to spread Islam in the West.

An SIOE organiser for the event said, “It is known that many Islamist projects are funded by Saudi Arabia, which forbids any other religion within its borders."

The group pointed out that mosques are being built in record numbers in the western world, whilst at the same time non-Muslim places of worship are being destroyed in majority-Muslim countries like Turkey.

Virgins Killed in honor killings in jordan

Mere Suspicion Of An Illicit Affair In Jordan Often Leads To "Honour Killings"

Virgins Killed

.........A quarter of all women killed in Jordan for having an illicit relationship die merely because they were suspected of involvement in such a relationship, while only 15 per cent are killed after adultery is proven, a study by UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) has revealed.

The study was unveiled on 25 November to mark the UN global campaign entitled Sixteen Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women, organised by UNIFEM.

Whether victims turn out to have been virgins or not seems to make little difference to the sentences handed down to the perpetrators; the killers often get 6-12 months, in keeping with legal precedents.

Allowing muslim "no-go" areas anywhere in the West will, in the end, get far more killed than assimilation

Bishop warns of no-go zones for non-Muslims

Islamic extremists have created "no-go" areas across Britain where it is too dangerous for non-Muslims to enter, one of the Church of England's most senior bishops warns today.

Michael Nazir-Ali: Extremism has flourished as Britain lost Christianity
Have your say: What does the future hold for the Church of England? The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester and the Church's only Asian bishop, says that people of a different race or faith face physical attack if they live or work in communities dominated by a strict Muslim ideology.

The deviant sexual culture that has brainwashed the Bali Bomber must not be allowed to metastasize

The Bali bomber is obviously lost in the culture of islamic deviant sado-masochistic sexual fantasy world similar to that of a serial killer

Bali bomber feels 'beautiful' facing end

Bali bombers denied request to be beheaded

ONE of the Bali bombers has written from his Indonesian jail that he feels so "beautiful" on the eve of his execution that "no words can describe how good the feeling is".

Mukhlas, the elder brother of the so-called smiling assassin Amrozi, posted a 10-page statement on the internet exhorting Muslims to show their support for him by turning out in mass numbers for his burial.

An Islamic militant's website is carrying the statement, fuelling fears the execution of the three bombers could ignite violence and arouse public sympathy for their cause in the world's biggest Muslim nation.

The controversial Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir warned last month of a "big disaster" in Indonesia if the executions were carried out. He made the comments after visiting the bombers in jail. But the Jakarta security expert Sidney Jones says that while the executions are likely to generate anger and retaliation against Indonesian government installations or personnel, "careful security arrangements should be able to prevent any incident".

Mukhlas, a father of six who is also known as Ali Gufron, titled his jail writings The Right And Good Dreams.

"Please read my writing," he urged Muslims in the internet statement, which he called his "last will and testament".

"I would not trade how I am feeling now with anything else in the world," he said. Mukhlas claimed that Amrozi and the third bomber, Imam Samudra, are also writing books in their cells in a high-security jail on Nusakambangan Island, off Central Java.

A former Islamic preacher in his late 40s, Mukhlas has showed no remorse for helping to organise the 2002 bombings in Bali's Kuta tourist district, which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. Many of the victims were Muslims. He claimed on the internet he has sympathy "from all Muslims in the world" for what he did as well as the "blessings of God". Earlier, the three bombers said in a signed statement smuggled from jail that their deaths would make them heroes to God and that being "thrown out of the country" would be "an adventure" and "a sightseeing trip".

Parallels with freeing North Koreans from it's evil brainwashers with: freeing people of islam from it's evil brainwashers

Sending Out Signals to Long-Isolated North Koreans

Defectors Who Once Worked for Government of Kim Jong Il Now Broadcast From South of the DMZ

SEOUL -- Trained as a military propagandist in North Korea, Kim Seong Min has turned his skills against the government that once forced his allegiance. From a small radio studio in Seoul, he and a handful of other North Korean defectors deliver daily broadcasts to people who remain behind in the isolated communist state run by Kim Jong Il.

"To give food provisions, if the Kim Jong Il regime still exists, is merely prolonging their lives in a state of slavery," said Kim, founder and director of the station known as FNK, for Free North Korea Radio. "But broadcasts . . . give an opportunity to change their own future, and provide food for the spirit."

The North's estimated 23 million people have little accurate information about the outside world. Listening to foreign news sources is illegal, part of a government effort to block infiltration of subversive ideas. But as more North Koreans buy low-cost radios brought in from China, violating that ban has become easier

The brainwashers are brainwashing younger and younger children to carry out their murders - the dominos must fall to save millions of lives

A new, younger jihadi threat emerges

Casablanca, Morocco - With a greeting that was as telling as it was macabre, Imane Laghriss dropped her satchel on the table of a trendy coffee shop here recently.

"It's stuffed with explosives, watch out!" snapped the young woman, echoing the grim humor commonly heard among Moroccan teenagers. But Ms. Laghriss's remark carried with it a degree of stark reality.

Four years ago, she and her twin sister were arrested for planning to blow themselves up inside Morocco's parliament. They were 14 at the time. The two were sentenced to five years in jail in 2003. After serving 18 months and nearly two years in a juvenile center, they are now free.

In many respects, she is a normal young woman who speaks about building a family and giggles at the mention of a potential husband.

But while Imane claims to have forgone violence, she still holds the same radical ideology that inspired the unrealized plan. She surfs radical websites and says she wants to go to Iraq to fight US troops – "but not civilians."

On Wednesday, Pakistani police arrested a 15-year-old boy for allegedly trying to blow himself up at a rally for opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, who was killed Thursday as she left an election rally in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. In September, a 15-year-old killed 30 people when he drove a truck full of explosives into an Algerian naval barracks.

In the vital cultural war of our time, love and freedom will ALWAYS conquer hatred and fear and death

A Big Fat Iraqi Wedding

An Ongoing War, Concrete Barrier or Family Disapproval Could Stop This Couple From Marrying.

Eman Jabbar and Luay Rudha's love story has become an example of Iraq's progress. Jabbar, a teacher, is a Sunni, while her new husband is a Shiite.

The couple fell in love in one of Baghdad's most dangerous neighborhoods and waited six years to marry.

"I loved him from the first look," Jabbar said. "I felt he was the one person I could live with."

Rudha, who is a plumber, was unable to get Jabbar's family to agree to the marriage initially. First the war arrived, pitting Sunnis against Shiites. Then, Shiite militiamen killed Jabbar's brother.

Finally, it became so dangerous in the west Baghdad neighborhood, the U.S. military erected concrete walls to separate the Sunni and Shiite areas.

Yet, Rudha's love for Jabbar never died.

"I didn't even ask if she is Sunni or Shiite," Rudha said.

He kept proposing and continued calling, writing and even meeting Jabbar for quick coffee-shop dates.

"The thing I liked most about him was his persistence," Jabbar said.

When the violence decreased this summer, the couple announced their engagement. To the lovebirds' surprise, their families and neighbors were delighted by the wedding.

It seemed to signify that finally things were getting better in their area. Now, coincidentally, the Americans have begun taking down the concrete walls that had been dividing the two communities. So it seemed in the end love conquered all in this against-the-odds pairing.
