Court travels to Mason City to hear steel wheels case
Arguments in the dispute involving Mennonites' tractors are scheduled for this week.

A long-simmering dispute over religious practices and newly topped roads will go before the Iowa Supreme Court on Thursday, when justices for the second time in 10 years will hear oral arguments on the road as part of a campaign to make the court more accessible to the public.

Oral arguments in two cases, including a Mitchell County dispute involving steel-wheeled tractors and a 13-year-old Mennonite boy, are scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday in Mason City.

Nearly 100 people attended a similar session in Cedar Rapids, compared with the average dozen or so who regularly attend similar proceedings in Des Moines. Officials already have moved the Mason City event from a city library to a larger venue, Reunion Hall in Music Man Square, which seats about 300 people.

“The session was scheduled for the evening so it is convenient for anyone interested who wants to come see the court in action,” Chief Justice Mark Cady said in a news release. “We've also asked teachers to encourage their students to attend the session. Local attorneys told us that there is quite a bit of interest in the cases, and they look forward to a large audience.”

The main draw is expected to be an appeal by Matthew Hoover Zimmerman, 13, a Mennonite who was cited in February 2010 for violating a Mitchell County ordinance that bans steel-wheel tractors on all hard-surfaced roads.

Court papers filed by Zimmerman’s lawyer say the ordinance unfairly impinges on members of Old Order of Groffdale Mennonite Conference churches, which ban the use by members of any machinery equipped with rubber tires.

Documents say the law “severely threatens the ability of the Mennonites to follow their religious beliefs and continue to be contributing members of society. Because the Mennonites will not violate their religious beliefs, and because the ordinance effectively excludes them from all paved roads in Mitchell County, the ordinance makes it at least very difficult, and probably impossible, for them to access their crops or get those crops to market.”

A court brief filed by the Mitchell County attorney, however, argues that a rule against the use of tires “is not a religious practice or belief.”

Mitchell County contends the ordinance was not intended to discriminate and was created solely because the county spent $9 million on road improvements in 2009 and noticed that a lot of the new construction was getting quickly damaged by the steel wheels.

Canada: First Country to Sign Protocol on Combating Anti-Semitism

As if any further proof was necessary, Canada stepped forward once again and showed the world that it is Israel’s best friend. In taking the field on behalf of the Jewish people this time around, the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper became the first country last week to sign the Ottawa Protocol on Combating Anti-Semitism.

“The fact that this important document was crafted in Ottawa is further testimony to Canada’s leadership role in this vital global battle,” said Shimon Fogel of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, adding that the protocol is “groundbreaking” and “will serve as the basis of the renewed international effort against anti-Semitism.”

The protocol, drawn up by international parliamentarians in a series of conferences that began in Ottawa last November, is intended to combat the ongoing, worldwide threat of anti-Semitism. It is a reaffirmation of the “commitment to institute tangible measures” to counter the scourge of anti-Jewish hatred that is often disguised as criticism of Israel. The Ottawa document is meant to plainly distinguish between the two and does so in exemplary fashion.

“The criticism of Israel similar to that levelled against any other country cannot be anti-Semitic,” the protocol states. “But singling Israel out for selective condemnation and opprobrium – let alone denying its right to exist or seeking its destruction – is discriminatory and hateful, and not saying so is dishonest.”

The Canadian government co-hosted last year’s initial conference along with the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism. The meeting “reaffirmed the London Declaration on Combating Anti-Semitism as a template for fighting anti-Jewish prejudice.” In this spirit, Prime Minister Harper addressed the November gathering and, in plain language not often heard from a politician, especially on this subject, showed his great respect and support for the Jewish state as well as a high level of morality and insight lacking in most other world leaders.

“When Israel, the only country in the world whose very existence is under attack, is consistently singled out for condemnation, I believe we are morally obligated to take a stand,” said Harper. “…Not just because it is the right thing to do, but because history shows us, and the ideology of the anti-Israel mob tell us all too well, that those who threaten the existence of the Jewish people are in the longer term a threat to us all.”

Without directly naming the guilty party, Harper also added “a hateful ideology with global ambitions” is the “one which targets the Jewish homeland as a scapegoat” and is responsible for Jews being “savagely attacked around the world.” Hopefully, someone from the Obama administration was present and taking notes.

The Ottawa Protocol on Combating Anti-Semitism is just the latest manifestation of Harper’s siding with Israel on the international stage. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.

that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old [Muhammad was 53], and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death).

and even her athletic prowess were probed. Biden's aneurisms are no
secret. Look at Cheney and Clinton--we all know about their heart
problems. How could I have left out Wild Bill before or during the White House?

Nope... not one lady has stepped up and said, "He was soooo shy," or
"What a great dancer!" Now look at the rest of this.... no classmates,
not even the recorder for the Columbia class notes ever heard of him.

I just don't know about this fellow.

Who was the best man at his wedding? Start there. Then check groomsmen.
Then get the footage of the graduation ceremony.

Has anyone talked to the professors? It is odd that no one is bragging
that they knew him or taught him or lived with him.

When did he meet Michele and how? Are there photos? Every president
gives to the public all their photos, etc. for their library. What has
he released?

And who in hell voted for him to be the most popular man in 2010?

While he is such a great orator, why doesn't anyone in Obama's college

knew him, and they all know me. I don't have a classmate who ever knew
Barack Obama at Columbia ... EVER!

Nobody recalls him. Root adds that he was also, like Obama, "Class of '83
political science, pre-law" and says, "You don't get more exact or closer
than that. Never met him in my life, don't know anyone who ever met him."

At the class reunion, our 20th reunion five years ago, who was asked to

Police have been accused of “covering up” a campaign of abuse, threats and violence aimed at “Islamicising” an area of London.

Victims say that officers in the borough of Tower Hamlets have ignored or downplayed outbreaks of hate crime, and suppressed evidence implicating Muslims in them, because they fear being accused of racism.

The claims come as four Tower Hamlets Muslims were jailed for at least 19 years for attacking a local white teacher who gave religious studies lessons to Muslim girls.

The Sunday Telegraph has uncovered more than a dozen other cases in Tower Hamlets where both Muslims and non-Muslims have been threatened or beaten for behaviour deemed to breach fundamentalist “Islamic norms.”

One victim, Mohammed Monzur Rahman, said he was left partially blind and with a dislocated shoulder after being attacked by a mob in Cannon Street Road, Shadwell, for smoking during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan last year.

“Two guys stopped me in the street and asked me why I was smoking,” he said. “I just carried on, and before I knew another dozen guys came and jumped me. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in hospital.”

Now is the time to speak some Truth to Power. The Ku Klux Klan was established by the Democratic Party. Yes, the Ku Klux Klan murdered thousands of Republicans -- African-American and white -- in the years following the Civil War. Yes, the Republican Party and a Republican President, Ulysses Grant, destroyed the KKK with their Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871.

Stephanopoulos was wrong to claim that the Klan changed from being Democrat "very quickly." How did the Ku Klux Klan re-emerge in the 20th century? For that, the Democratic Party is to blame.

It was a racist Democrat President, Woodrow Wilson, who premiered Birth of a Nation in the White House. That racist movie was based on a racist book written by one of Wilson's racist friends from college. In 1915, the movie spawned the modern-day Klan, with its burning crosses and white sheets.

Inspired by the movie, some Georgia Democrats revived the Klan. Soon, the Ku Klux Klan again became a powerful force within the Democratic Party. The KKK so dominated the 1924 Democratic Convention that Republicans, speaking truth to power, called it the Klanbake. In the 1930s, a Democrat President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, appointed a Klansman, Senator Hugo Black (D-AL), to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In the 1950s, the Klansmen against whom the civil rights movement struggled were Democrats. The notorious police commissioner Bull Connor, who attacked African-Americans with dogs and clubs and fire hoses, was both a Klansman and the Democratic Party's National Committeeman for Alabama. Starting in the 1980s, the Democratic Party elevated a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), to third-in-line for the presidency.

Why New York's future is fleeing
Nowhere near enough jobs for the younger generation
For more than 15 years, New York state has led the country in domestic outmigration: For every American who comes here, roughly two depart for other states. This outmigration slowed briefly following the onset of the Great Recession. But a recent Marist poll suggests that the rate is likely to increase: 36 percent of New Yorkers under 30 plan to leave over the next five years. Why are all these people fleeing?

For one thing, according to a recent survey in Chief Executive, our state has the second-worst business climate in the country. (Only California ranks lower.) People go where the jobs are, so when a state repels businesses, it repels residents, too.

Moving out: More than a third of New Yorkers under 30 plan to move away in the next five years.
Indeed, the poll also found that 62 percent of New Yorkers planning to leave cited economic factors -- including cost of living (30 percent), taxes (19 percent) and the job environment (10 percent) -- as the main reason.

Upstate, a big part of the problem is extraordinarily high property taxes. New York has the country's 15 highest-taxed counties, including Nassau and Westchester, which rank Nos. 1 and 2.

Most of the property tax goes toward paying the state's Medicaid bill -- which is unlikely to diminish, since the state's most powerful lobby, the alliance of the hospital workers' union and hospital management, has gone unchallenged by our new governor, Andrew Cuomo.

New York City doesn't suffer from outmigration to the extent that the state does; in fact, the city grew slightly in the last decade, thanks to immigration from other countries.

There's also more work in Gotham than in the state as a whole. The problem is that the kind of work available shows that the city accommodates new immigrants much better than it supports middle-class aspirations. A recent report from the Drum Major Institute has the data: "The two fastest-growing industries in New York are also the lowest-paid. More than half of the city's employment growth over the past year has been in retail, hospitality and food services, all of which pay their workers less than half of the city's average wage."

Worse, more than 80 percent of the new jobs are in the city's five lowest-paying sectors.

Parts of the country are seeing a revival of manufacturing -- traditionally a source of upward mobility for immigrants -- but not New York City, where manufacturing continues to decline. The culprits here include the city's zoning policies, business taxes and decaying physical infrastructure.

Then there's the cost of living in New York City. A 2009 report by the Center for an Urban Future found that "a New Yorker would have to make $123,322 a year to have the same standard of living as someone making $50,000 in Houston. In Manhattan, a $60,000 salary is equivalent to someone making $26,092 in Atlanta." Even Queens, the report found, is the fifth most expensive urban area in the country.

The implications of Gotham's "hourglass economy" -- with all the action on the top and the bottom and not much in the middle -- are daunting.

The Drum Major report, which noted that 31 percent of the adults employed in New York work at low-wage labor, came with a political agenda. The institute wants the city to subsidize new categories of work by expanding the scope of "living-wage" laws, which require higher pay than minimum-wage laws do, to all businesses that receive city funds or contracts. But that would mean higher taxes on the middle class and a further narrowing of the hourglass' midsection.

Gov. Cuomo is calling for a property-tax cap but has postponed the question of "mandate relief" for localities -- for example, relaxing state laws that force localities to pay out exorbitant pension benefits. Mayor Bloomberg has pledged not to increase local taxes -- but even at their current level, city taxes and regulations will keep serving as an exit sign for aspiring 20-something workers.

In short, we can expect New York to lead the country in outmigration for the near future.

'Jordan is Palestine,' MK Eldad declares at embassy

A handful of Israelis marked Jordanian Independence Day on Tuesday by trying to present the Jordanian Embassy in Ramat Gan with a petition to make the country the official homeland of the Palestinian people.

The initiator of the petition, MK Arye Eldad (National Union), said it asks “that King Abdullah declare Jordan as the national homeland of the Palestinian people. His father [King Hussein] said ‘Jordan is Palestine, Palestine is Jordan.’ Unfortunately Abdullah doesn’t want to follow in his father’s footsteps on this.

“There is already a Palestinian state in Jordan.

Eighty percent of the Jordanian people are Palestinians, and it is built on 65% of the Jewish homeland allocated in the Balfour Declaration and given to us at the San Remo Conference [in 1920]. Once the Palestinians lose their orphan status as a people without a state, their international demands will become much weaker,” Eldad said.

He also invoked the recent popular revolutions in the Middle East, saying, “If what happened in Tahrir Square happens in Amman we could find in a single day that on our eastern border there is no Hashemite Kingdom, but a Palestinian state controlled by 80% of the public.”

Eldad took an elevator up to the Jordanian Embassy in an office tower on Ramat Gan’s Rehov Abba Hillel, but came back down minutes later after he was refused entrance to the embassy.

Eldad’s spokeswoman said that he was able to enter the floor of the embassy but that police who had been called by the Jordanian staff prevented him from entering.

Ron Breiman from the Hatikva Party (which Eldad chairs and which is one of the four parties that make up the National Union) said making Jordan Palestine was not nearly as far-fetched as the traditional solutions for solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to estimates by The National Institute for Literacy, roughly 47 percent of adults in Detroit, Michigan -- 200,000 total -- are "functionally illiterate," meaning they have trouble with reading, speaking, writing and computational skills. Even more surprisingly, the Detroit Regional Workforce finds half of that illiterate population has obtained a high school degree.

The DRWF report places particular focus on the lack of resources available to those hoping to better educate themselves, with fewer than 10 percent of those in need of help actually receiving it. Only 18 percent of the programs surveyed serve English-language learners, despite 10 percent of the adult population of Detroit speaking English "less than very well."

Additionally, the report finds, one in three workers in the state of Michigan lack the skills or credentials to pursue additional education beyond high school.

In March, the Detroit unemployment rate hit 11.8 percent, one of the highest in the nation, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last month. There is a glimmer of hope, however: Detroit's unemployment rate dropped by 3.3 percent in the last year alone.

Real estate mogul Donald Trump and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have the highest negative ratings of any of the Republicans who might run for president in 2012.

Sixty-four percent of Americans have an unfavorable opinion of Trump, according to a CNN/Opinion Research poll released Thursday, the most negative of any of the potential candidates. Just 31 percent have a positive opinion of the host of NBC's "The Apprentice."

Chicago Shootings: Two Dead, At Least Eight Wounded Overnight

Two people were killed and at least eight people were wounded in separate Chicago shootings late Friday into early Saturday.

CBS 2 Chicago reports that a 17-year-old girl was shot in the face while standing in the 6400 block of South Wood Street about 10 p.m. Friday. Shots were fired from across the street, and the girl was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

On the West Side, a man was reportedly shot in the leg about 10:30 p.m., he was also hospitalized in good condition following the shooting.

About 30 minutes later, the Chicago Tribune reports that a 15-year-old boy was standing in the 5100 block of South Rockwell Street "when a red vehicle drove by and someone fired shots at him." The shooting was apparently gang related, and the boy's injuries were not life threatening.

Between midnight and 3 a.m., seven others were shot citywide, two fatally.

Kenneth Sims, 20, of the 2700 block of West 26th Street, was shot in the back in the 1300 block of South Blue Island Avenue, the Tribune reports. He was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m.

About 2:44 a.m., Ismail Robinson, 22, was found shot in the head in the front yard of a home in the 5000 block of South Drexel Boulevard, according to CBS 2 Chicago.

Nobody was in custody for the shootings early Saturday.

Three people convicted of crimes as a result of a terrorism-related investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) were later naturalized as U.S. citizens by the Obama administration, according to federal auditors.

The March 2011 audit (released on April 21, 2011) by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), entitled Criminal Alien Statistics: Information on Incarcerations, Arrests and Costs, shows that three individuals were among “defendants where the investigation involved an identified link to international terrorism but they were charged with violating other statutes [not directly related to terrorism], including fraud, immigration, drugs, false statements, and general conspiracy charges,” referred by DOJ as Category II terrorism-related cases.

Libya horror: Children say they witnessed their mothers raped, fathers murdered
